And who knows what the mix was 100 years ago. Probably a lot less "stuff" in it compared to today??
I've been playin' in concrete since I was 7 yrs old in many fashions and made a fine living on the shipping it out of the plant end. Freeways and space launch complexes don't do much exposed aggregate so the first of that I loaded when I got to the retail end of things I had to go see. The contractor had a dozen 2 liter bottles of Coke on the tailgate of his truck. They get the mud all laid down walked out there with that Coke and proceed to shake those bottles and spray the top of the slab down with Coke. :wtf: I'm thinkin'. Little bulb in my head lights up. The sugar in the Coke kills the reaction in the cement. A couple beers later, a little broom and a water hose, exposed aggregate concrete. :BangHead: Dummass me.

Science and Chemistry is a wonderful thing!

Always wondered about exposed aggregate. Saves me having to ask siri...

I always had a large supply of 10 lb bags of sugar close by just in case a mixer pooped the bed to throw in the drum to keep the load from going off.

I think I got my garage heater running again...

Just did a 3 minute test run and it stayed on... It seemed to hiccup a little bit, but stayed on...

Well the powder keg went off...

My mother in law doesn’t approve of what her daughter is doing and got her a 3x5 poster that says something along the lines of “a marriage isn’t a car, you don’t trade it in for a newer, shiner model when things need worked on”. sister in law went off, stormed out and left. I’m trying so hard not to laugh, the funny part is she, SIL, let her new boyfriend open it since he didn’t have anything to unwrap...:rofl:

Thats hilarious. Bet that method isnt in any books either.

Doesnt coke have some phosphoric acid too?

Yes it does, but the sugar pulls the water from the concrete and reduces the avaialable water for the concrete to set so the reaction of hardening fails to happen at the surface layer. Then the un-set concrete at the surface can be swept away from the properly set underlayer, exposing the aggregate.

On the opposite end Calcium Chloride hastens the set time. There was a water reducing agent we used that if the recommended level was doubled it would retard the set time which was handy for long travel times to the job but not recommended for any kind of spec work. Many of the concrete structure failures that you see on the news, sooner or later will be back tracked to chemical additives in the concrete.

Any idea why the base coat on that sidewalk is brown? That can't be just the sand could it? or clay mixed in?

Concrete...it’s harder than it appears.

Got my replacement radio for the VW today but need to have a service appointment for them to read the safety unlock code. What a racket that is.
:bs_flag:

Also got a new bluetooth compatible touch screen radio for the Caddy, moved the camper yet again, decorated the Christmas tree, found a speedometer, now a movie..
