The thread on BFG white letters turning brown made me go back to my chemistry roots and figure out WHY the white letters are turning brown.

It turns out that the reason why is because of an antiozonant compound that they put in the rubber to protect it called N-Isopropyl-N′-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine known as IPPD.

IPPD reacts with ozone faster that the rubber does and therefore protects the rubber. However, IPPD also turns brown when it oxidizes.

The comments about brake cleaner working made me go look at the solubility of IPPD. It is practically insoluble in water and slightly reactive with chlorine. However, it it highly soluble in Acetone.

To confirm the hypothesis that the IPPD oxidized residue is the culprit, I took some acetone and an old tooth brush and scrubbed the “A” on my T/A tires for 15 secs and then wiped it off.

Hypothesis confirmed.

Same thing. The antiozonates used may vary, and the colors they produce may be different, but the principles are the same. These organic molecules are not water soluble and require an appropriate solvent to remove them. Try acetone first.

Some VW tires turn green, but they clean up with acetone just the same.
 
We have a star in our midst. @Ddaddy found a cure for our BFG brown colored white letter issue. It seems that nothing under the sun will clean those dingy white letters. Dave put on his thinking cap and found a solution. Acetone. Yep, finger nail polish remover or the chemicals found in brake clean. Check out thread #44 on page 2. Thanks again Dave.

2 weeks ago today was 10,000 pages. 118 pages or lets say
By 10 am 120. 60 pages a week. Wow. 1440 comments. 200 comments per day (roughly).
