Stop in for a cup of coffee

Saw something kinda cool today. Was nice sunny day in high 40's. I guess the critters were very active... As I got on the highway, I noticed a lot of bigger birds. First a half dozen turkey buzzards circling. Then I noticed a few of what I believe are some kind of hawk here and there high in the trees. Suddenly one just drops to the ground and instantly reverses back up - with feet kicking under it.. Was tough to see clearly because both were brown and blended with everything in the background. I believe it had a fairly large rabbit.

You have Jack rabbits around?

Sounds like a red tail hawk. They are the most common in PA. I have seen them swoop down and take squirrels and rabbits. Interestingly enough, they seem to hang out near the turkey buzzards picking up cues as to where the thermals are. Up at Hawk mountain PA, you can see hundreds of turkey buzzards mixed with hawks riding the thermals.

I bet I have 4 or more in my yard. and 6 squirrels, and many birds. Although they aren't too active in the extreme cold even though I have feeders full. We have Raccoon and opossum and an occasional lost deer. Owls in the summertime in the pine trees. Geez, a real zoo! LOL

Yeah, we have kinda the same. But add in the roaming herd of deer, the coyotes and grey foxes that pass through and the skunk that showed up this Fall eating everyone’s Halloween pumpkins.

The skunk scared the hell out of the Pizza delivery guy who walked up to the front door back in early November and came face to face with it as it was munching on one of our pumpkins. He ran away and called me from his car in terror! I just went out making a lot of noise and it scampered off.

I have experienced close encounters with lots of skunks camping all over PA in the past 30 years and know that they don’t want anything to do with you and will retreat if you let them. They don’t want to spray and will only do it as a last resort since it takes them a few days to regain the reserves to spray again...leaving them defenseless.

Don't know of much skunk activity at the house, but they are definitely around. We do see deer in the back yard regularly and squirrels and rabbits daily if we pay any attention at all as well as chipmunks, but they are a bit more sneaky.. I have noticed an owl hooting recently in the evening taking the dog out sometimes. Never seen a coyote wild around here. Foxes yes.

Hay Dave,freezing yet? or again?
Not right now. It is holding at 42*. It’s been a reasonably mild Winter so far with only one small snowfall and only a couple of days of deep cold.

We have 2 or 3 days of deep cold coming in midweek, but nothing like what the Midwest is getting blasted with. Our lows will be around 10* with zero degree windchills. We might see an inch or two of snow midweek.

Every day it’s not too bad is just one day closer to Spring.

Deer, squirrels chipmunks rabbits woodchucks and skunks.
Had a skunk come at me in the yard, spun around and was about to demonstrate its authority and i had the garden hose in my hand and it was running nice cold water..dont think it could spray if it wanted to. Wandered off defeated.
Ruffed grouse, geese bald eagles ,hawks ravens crows and no pigeons.
Oh, foxes and weasels.
Coyotes in the field.

Well. Today was the last official weigh-in day of January. 16 months after starting my weight loss program, I am now down 39 lbs.

Carrying that much weight was the same as carrying this strapped to my body all the time. No wonder I feel so much better now than I did then!

39 lbs down...61 lbs to go.
That’s great Dave!
I joined right about the time you started, and remember the photos. Big changes.
Great work!

And bears. Forgot to mention the bears. Not right now, not that far north.
But we arent far from the river, lots of oak trees and they tour from oak to oak.

We have lots of chipmunks and the groundhogs are around too. We also get quite a few box turtles for some reason.

Being on a high granite ridge for this area with a creek running 200’ in the valley below, we also get a variety of raptors. I have seen Red tailed hawks, Coopers hawks, Sharp shinned hawks, Kestrals and even the occasional Perigrin Falcon (saw one take out a dove at full speed crossing the back yard)

No bears here...yet. We do have wild turkeys and a few years ago there was a mountain lion down in the valley that scared the hell out of a few people as it was hunting deer. It even chased a kid on a quad for a quarter mile who got too near one of its recent kills. They sent up heat seeking helicopters to find it, but never did.

Really? I never looked.

Well, how about that!

I think someone’s math is off some where...that can’t be true.
I wouldn't see why it couldn't be true... but our numbers don't match from what is listed on the posts to what is on the notable members page. Don't know which is correct.

Well, I finished the full cycling on the shirt iron-ones and they are holding up exceptionally well. No visible signs of wear from all the wash cycles. The t-shirt ones look great and the sweat shirt one looks even better (probably has to do with the fabric density).

Once I get this damned tooth extracted in 2 weeks, I will focus on making the Coffee Club shirts available.
