Stop in for a cup of coffee

Here's an addition to yesterday's conversation.

So completed my FIL’s estate transfer today. It has finished. Finally, went very well. Surprisingly given what happened in Feb.

Anyway, we were given a box containing military records of my wife’s grandfather who passed when my FIL was just a year or two old. He served as a Navy Officer during WW2. I’d an archived search years ago on him and knew he had been wounded during the Battle of Salvo Island on August 8th, 1942. This was during the battle for Guadalcanal

Going thru it, I found documents where he also was in the battle of Dutch Harbor and wounded slightly there from shrapnel. Dutch harbor was the kick off raid during the Battle of Midway in June 1942,

Iwo Jima in Feb 1945.

Further he served on another ship providing minesweeping and resupply for task force 54, primarily responsible for screening and supplying the USS Indianapolis…. His ship escorted the USS Indianapolis from the coast of Okinawa in 1945 back to San Francisco for repairs after getting bombed. It then escorted the Indy to Pearl Harbor, departing Pearl Harbor on 19 July 1945 and returning to Okinawa. The Indianapolis would then travel unescorted to the Mariana islands with the atomic bomb parts.

That’s one hell of a battle resume

Tomorrow may be. (if you can believe the internet)

I know she would totally disagree but coming back too soon then playing one of the best in the league? I would let her sit one more game. Coming back to soon then giving 110 % (as she always does) is a recipe for a long injury.

Down the road less traveled!
It was good while it lasted.

I haven't been back up there since 2018.
Don't know if the road is even open.
The switchback on the other side of the ridge had already been abandoned. Supposed to be maintained sufficent for wildfire response. You can be the judge.

WTF

Who knows. I recall a "this road not maintained, proceed at your own risk" sign back in the mid 1980s.

There's many penny pinching measures throughout the parks, but more so in ones like the Del Water Gap NRA which kindof are dropped on the NPS to deal with. You should see what most of the buildings look like, even the historic ones.

At least the NJ state roads up there get gravel in them most years. Although there's one from Hanesville IIRC that is shut due to the bridge being out, or road washout.

It's beautiful up there, although a bit rocky.

This section of the road to Buttermilk Falls is about the worst thats basicly still drivable with a normal road vehicle.
