sitting with my old man drinking margaritas on fathers day, just wondering what the story is behind the worm in tequila, how'd it start and why it's done?

cheers all,

Dan Dan the pisstank man :)

The worm is found on or in the Agava plant that tequila is made out of.

The worms are fed nothing but peyote two weeks prior to bottling. This means the worm in your bottle is basically a hit of acid.

From Wiki

"The use of the worm is exclusive to mezcal, since the Mexican standards authority, Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM), prohibits adding insects or larvae to tequila."

Apparently, mezcal is cheap liquor produced from agave but it doesn't have to meet the higher standards that tequila does. Many poor people in Mexico eat worms and grubs. It is considered an honor and a delicacy to get to eat the worm in the bottle.

During college we tried drying a tequilla worm out & smoking it. Never do this. I am still recovering.

Thank you for posting this. This is a big misunderstanding people have. Tequila doesn't have a worm, Mescal does (sometimes). It's usually the cheap crap that has it. It's a marketing gimmic.

One thing to note, mescal is made from agave, but tequila made from only BLUE agave.

One more thing to note that is misunderstood by many people. Cuervo Gold is not, I repeat NOT good tequila. It's the most well known, but it is crap.

Next time you have a margarita at a bar, Do yourself a favor. Have them make it with Herradura Reposado or Don Julio Reposado instead of Cuervo Gold.

The old story I always heard when I first hit drinking age back in the 70's was if the worm wasn't dead buy the time it hit the bottom of the bottle, the mezcal was not considered any good, and it was disposed of. Probably a myth but somewhat of an interesting theory. ;)

Great Mezcal clarifications. Our prefered brand of mezcal back in the day was Monte Alban but were not concearned about quality just it's effect. I believe it was the only thing we could find at the local ABC store with a worm. My wife & I prefer Cabo now Small Block & yes the worm smoking night is one that will live in infamy. The last thing I remember one of the guys saying is that we were on a five year mission to catch the buzz no man had caught before. Idiots. We still laugh about it 27 years later.

Well im not too sure about the whole tequila not having a worm in it cause on 2003 new years i drank an "airplane bottle" of tequila you know the tiny ones. It was from my parents honeymoon from the mid 70's lol so it was really old. It had a worm in it that looked like a grub or something. I had already drank 12 beers by the time the ball dropped which is when i took the tequila. The only way to describe what happend was tht it felt like someone injected 3-5 drinks at once into my veins lol. screwed me up pretty good, but i still drank the other 12 beers i had lol.

I have drank mescal with a scorpion in it once too and shared half of the scorpion with a friend lol.

The Cabo is good. Listen to that Lenny Kravitz........American Woman.......O.K. i'm back now. Have a buddy that sells the stuff along with others wholesale. I got a case of Cabo Silver and a case of Cabo gold. Both have a great taste. Jerry Garcia is on now..... Life is good
