I didn`t read all that , never heard of any cattle man having his cows bread to calve in freezing weather.
All breed them for early spring births , before the flies get bad, but not freezing cold! A man w/ that experience and that size ranch would know better, makes me think a city dude wrote the article, wonder what else he got wrong !!
Things are different in Montana. When I was young, a buddy of mine and I went on a two week tour of the northwest. Somewhere I have a picture of his Bronco next to a snow bank, that was taller than the rig. This was in the middle of June. Leaving Missouri, with temps in the high 90's, we were not prepared for that type of weather. Not sure what you would consider "early spring" there.
I didn't post that article to discuss breeding techniques but to bring light to the fact that we are running out of people like this.
Cattle ranching is a 24/7, 365 job. If someone needs time off there has to be a body to cover that time period. Some of my extended family are cattle ranchers & I've been to see them & livestock don't take time off just because the humans do.

The last of the milk producing farms within miles of me sold out last year. It is a tough life with no reward and it is getting worse. Growing up almost every kid I knew was being raised or had family with a farm. I would now bet there are at most 3 kids that go to those schools that knows anyone with a farm.

Actually calving in the freezing weather is common out here in the west. Montana and Wyoming can get blizzards through May and it can freeze at night to the middle of June. (It can freeze any night of the year in the high elevations.)

I may be wrong here, but to say 'shouldn't have to' is not cool at all. I am not around farmers, but the ones I knew of growing up did it because it was a family thing, not because they had to.Apparently you missed the "Shouldn't have to" part.
I'm sure some of them do it cause they feel like they have to.

I was raised in it, but thru unfortunate circumstances , was screwed out of the whole inheritance thing. Dad was a slave driver, not sure I would have stayed in it anyway------------

No, that's the part that makes her an idiot. Nobody should be forced into anything, but she sounds as if she wants to steer people away. That's just as bad if not worse, considering the shrinking number of farms we have now.
Agriculture srinks more every year. Farms and ranches get bigger to be more efficient and survive. Few people to take over when the parents retire/die off. Some kids grow up and move away not desiring the business/lifestyle
The number of farm families decline and each generation becomes further removed from what ag is and where our food actually comes from. As our population continues to grow, and IF the weather change will become a factor in the near future, hard times might be coming for the general population.!
Ag enterprises that are not diversified are at risk continually, beef, dairy, for example. The pork and poultry has gone 99% corporation. The poultry is more of a partnership between the chicken rancher and the company.
Ag is an occupation the person/family has to want. But wanting it will not get them there today. The costs of assets is too high and the return too low. It pretty much has to be inherited.
