Does anyone have a diagram on how the camshaft/timing gear assembly goes together. I bought a 66 383 that was disassembled and this is my first Mopar build and I don't have a book yet. (Recommendations appreciated ) Also, I want to use a Comp. Cam Thumper series Cam that is a three bolt cam, and what I have is a single bolt cam. Can I use a three bolt cam instead of a single bolt cam ?
 
Yes. The single and three bolt cams interchange. You simply need the matching timing set. As for the installation, crank gear at 12 O'clock cam gear at 6 O'clock. This position is actually 180* out, but it is easier to line the dots up since they are close together. So remember, if you assemble the engine in this fashion, set the distributor in with the rotor pointing to number 6, not number 1, or it will be timed 180* out.

Now all that said, there is more to camshaft timing than lining up the dots. Especially with a large cam like the Thumpr. The cam needs to be installed and degreed in per the camshaft timing card. If you just line up the dots, it will run ok, but never to its full potential until you degree it.
 
Thank you, the help is greatly appreciated. Where can I find a diagram that shows the parts involved in the timing assembly. Such as cam button, wear plate, fuel pump eccentric, stuff like that.
 
I don't believe the big block has a thrust plate or a thrust button. The best diagram for that is under your timing cover. You have everything right in front of you.

BBM do not have a retainer plate to keep the cam in the block. Nor do they have a button. They do use a button when using an aftermarket roller cam, but not used with a flat tappet cam. There is no fuel pump eccentric that bolts onto the front of the cam, its a lobe on the camshaft right behind the gear for the oil pump driveshaft.
