Timing has me stumped?

Been fooling around with my LA 360 again. Definitely got it running better, but I think I have a couple things going on. She starts right up, and I checked the timing (done this a few times before) getting it up to TDC and rotating the Distributor to proper placement. Seemed to line up right. I still can't get the timing mark to come up with the light?? Old 7mm standard wires?? The engine will stumble down low, but clears up when revved higher and seems to surge some?? I suspect a possible vacuum leak around the intake , but not sure. Maybe the Timing chain and gears are off a tooth. You guys have any thoughts?

Dial back analogue dial back timing light and also the right timing case/tab?

What kind of ignition and what kind of timing light?
 
Drill a hole in the top of the cap next to the #1 terminal, then shine the timing light in hole and see where the rotor is pointing.

When your piston is at TDC on the compression stroke does the tdc mark on the balancer line up with the zero mark on the timing cover tab?

That's a very good point. If the vacuum can is on manifold vacuum, the timing mark will be well to the passenger's side of the timing tab.

That makes me wonder if the vacuum can might be stuck in the advanced position.
 
I also wonder about a stuck mechanical advance, OR the springs being too light. That could give some advance at idle and make the mark not line up.

Extend the mark on the balancer out to the front of the belt pulley so it can be seen from the front of the motor no matter what position it is in. When the motor is running point the timing light at the pulley it will show up somewhere. Let us know where it shows up as if it were a clock face.
 
and if it has wet plug no.1 the light won't necessarily flash, only flashes if there is a spark,
wet plug has no spark, its kinda like and electrical dribble, and it doesn't trigger the light.

I have the same issue 69 340 motor with electronic ignition. pulled vacuum clean off. ran timing mark to top dead center , looked at rotor. Checked the piston on # 1 with dial indicator, installed new distributor same problem. I have it tuned by ear, but I know it can be better
 
The balancer has slipped? Has the front cover been changed. Some time off one side, some time off the other.
