Great you got it running. My 69 slant liked lots of advance, >20 deg at idle. I think that was because it always ran lean there, until I finally got a good Holley 1920.
If you later change to electronic ignition, like most people here do, the dwell is built into the electronics, so one less thing to fool with. You can use your existing points distributor with a Pertronix Ignitor or Crane Cams XR700, or install a later electronic distributor and use an external HEI module like I did.
