Torque Converters for Internally Balanced vs Externally Balanced Small Blocks

Sneaky 360. lol Well yeah, that's certainly a 360 balancer. It appears in good shape, too.

Here's another thought..... what if.... when the balancer was being rebuilt, they got the clock positioning off when it was put back together. Hmmm...

Yeah. That's certainly an idea. Maybe someone could post up a GOOD picture showing where that outer weight is, in relation to the TDC mark on the balancer. That would tell you real quick.

The offset weight is one piece with the hub that is keyed to the crankshaft so even if the outer ring was indexed wrong or slipped the balance would still be right. However the tdc mark could be incorrect. This is a picture of a stock balancer. It appears to be in good shape but no guarantee it is correct.

Was following this as I have a Little Red Express 360 motor and trans I'm fixing to re-purpose. It doesn't have that style balancer I'm pretty sure.....I'll tray and get pictures.....motor is going into an early 1969 car and the trans will make it into a 360 powered van....

We should hand this thread over to @stillrunners so he can get some help.

To update the followers, my engine shaking ended up being my timing was way too advanced. This is a new build, so I have a ton of variables... anyway, I had no pinging or sound of the starter grabbing, but yeah..... too advanced. Now.... I still have a drivetrain vibration, but that's another thread.

Sorry for my post.....the LRE 360 does have the external balance balancer - just a different type.....just didn't notice it in all the fury...

I had an externally balanced torque converter that I wanted to use for my 5.2 magnum which is internally balanced. Cut the weight off the torque converter and threw it in my tool box. Engine runs smooth.
