So I have my 904 out and wanted to install my TF-1 shift kit while i had it apart to replace leaky seals. HOLY CRAP I wasnt expecting so much disassembly to be involved in just a shift kit install!:eek:ops:
So... What Im thinking is that since I basically have to do a full teardown just to install this kit, I might as well run completely thru this thing since its been at least 20 years since this thing has been gone thru. All i need now is a book to tell me how to do it! Is there a "torqueflite for dummies" type book, and where can I buy it? It looks simple enough, but this will be my first attempt at a trans rebuild. Any advice from the professionals here will be greatly appreciated!

So much teardown????????????????????????

You don't even have to pull the trans out of the car

But the standard answers are this:

======================================================================================

Your Mopar shop manual, what do you have there?

You can download some fer free, good to have:

72 Service Manual

69 Dodge Serv. Manual

70 Dart Challenger manual

71 Dodge Body Manual

From over at "MyMopar," you can get a '66, a 70, and a few other manuals

Carl Munroe's book

Now this is 727, not 904, but much of it applies

One of the ASTG books. Check that this is the right one

These YouTube vids, there are 19--20 of 'em

I'm sure there are other methods, but if you get Firefox browzer and the "video download helper" add-on, you can save all these to your 'puter

What seals are leaking?Torque converter seal?Rear seal? When you pull the valve body the shift seals will come out easy.Don't complicate it

Huh?

The video's are a great start for someone who's never done it before.
I would say patience is required also. (Especially if you require help) in the middle of it. :)
We can help you though if needed.

Really-you have never changed the shift seals in the case?

I'm sorry, but there is nothing called shift seals in the trans.
The valve body has shift valves in it, and the clutch drums have lip seals, but other than that I have no idea what you mean by shift seals.

I think one of the hardest parts to concour when learning to rebuild 904/727 is to not force the front pump in the case and breaking a steel sealing ring. Or at least it was for me.

If you use aligning studs when putting the pump in you can wiggle it back and forth a little going in to let the rings kinda jiggle in to place.
They can hang up on a machining ridge really easy.

One thing I noticed we never really mention when we help people with trans stuff is that we all seemed to forget to mention assembly lube.
It's critical with teflon rings to keep them in place until they are in thier bores, and all the bushings need that startup lubrication until the fluid gets circulated.
It also makes seating the lip seals to the drums and pistons a lot nicer with less danger of cutting a seal.

i go to the drug store and buy a big jar of Vaseline and smile at the cashier...

As an industrial mechanic I have a small container of vasoline in the bottom of my tool box. That's raised a few questions when people go to barrow my drill. I use it to coat pneumatic boots so they don't dry out.

parts....

bulkpart.com

or buy a transtar deluxe kit from northernauto.com

And tell them you are working with trannies. :)

Parts, definitely bulkpart

WIT trans is another good place.

Well... To remove the rear servo piston to intall the tail housing has to come off, and in order to do that, you gotta have some kind of special snap ring pliers to disengage the output shaft bearing from the housing...

Either way, since the trans shifted perfectly before and didnt slip, I think im just gonna do the VB mods and reassemble the trans. I dont really have the time and resources to do a full rebuild, and I dont want to ruin a perfectly good trans on a crash course rebuild.

Ive heard mention of "blocking the accumulator piston", but I dont know exactly what that entails. My TF-1 kit says to simply reassemble the accumulator piston as it came out??? I thought that this was one of the primary things that needed to be modified. Any thoughts here?

The snap ring under the plate?

Spread with a pair of pliers that fit in the slot. Pull the tail lightly as you do this.
