i am curious as to what everyone is using as a tow rig.

if your like me, you have hauled a lot of cars around....many to scrap....too many home. LOL

well i kinda have a thing for tow trucks ....every time i see an accident on the highway i usually watch from a safe distance bcoz i like to watch the tow trucks pick up the incapacitated vehicles....... i noticed many different kinds ...i have seen a lot of them with names like "jerr-Dan" and i noticed either steel or aluminum flat beds......i would watch as they used either "J" or "T" hooks for ease of loading

So when it came time to put together a tow rig i needed something really easy to load ......i weigh 87 lbs. so pushing a car is nearly impossible for me, so i need to rely on the machine to do the work, in case i ever have to load it when no one is around to help me

its a 20 foot dovetail with rear exit ramps (easier to handle bcoz i dont ever have to pick them completely up) and on the front i mounted a truck bed tool box and mounted an electric winch inside.....then cut a hole for the cable. At the end of winch cable hook, there is a detachable chain attachment with "J" and "T" hook attachments .........

so i pull the car up with the "J" ot "T" hooks and tighten up the back chains as im pulling the car up. then i use two chains with load binders (safety chains) on the two front corners...in addition to the winch.....im legal that way, with it chained on all four corners and its really really easy to load.
Its all pulled around with a Ford F-350 Farm truck LOL

last year i actually re-planked it (with my uncle's help LOL) while it was stripped i repainted it........it gets worn bcoz it gets used a lot.
funny thing is the two times i ever lent it out, is the most damage it ever took. strange how other ppl seem to attract dents to your stuff. :banghead:

Hey Rani is that a FORD truck I see hooked up to your trailer?????? I have a good buddy that drives a tow truck so I did not buy a tow rig as he has access to a truck anythime we need it.:glasses7:

I have an older, well made 2 wheel car dolly ($375- ebay), which does not require a tag in FL.

I mounted a cheap HF weather resistant winch ($60) to the tongue, and I basically have a one man tow truck.

Super simple, and very cost effective.

I use my 2000 Dakota R/T CC (5.9L, 3.92:1SG), and have pulled a couple B bodies half way across the state with no trouble. Once with the entire bed, and car being towed, filled to capacity with extra parts.

Can't back up, though (at all).

Here is a few pics of my tow rig Rani.

sure is ....i dont want to start a battle of the brands or anything bcoz we all know that dodge trucks are so good looking .......but its kinda hard to beat an F-350 with a 460 .....horrible gas milage but going up a hill with a Big block B-body on the trailer......no problem :D LOL

its my Uncle's farm truck there are a few trucks to choose from when i use the rig .........before this one i used to use an F250 with a 351 ....talk about a dog .......same horrible milage as the 460 but with a fraction of the power. :banghead:

i will never understand why chrysler didnt keep the 440 for trucks into the mid or late 80s ....how cool would that have been to be able to get an 89 or so 440 dodge truck ....if they would have stuck around, eventually we could of had an EFI version. :banghead:

now there is a nice Dodge pickup ....gotta love that Hunter green

i have never messed with a diesel before ...i always end up with big block gas. but a diesel is going into a whole new quantum leap :D

funny how you can tell a ford diesel from a dodge diesel by sound ......the dodge has a real deep growl but the ford has a rattle sound ...either one is gorgeous ......my neighbor has a power stroke witha 5 speed and i love hearing him going home bcoz he dowshifts and it sounds like a jet the when he puts the clutch in, it quiets into a low rattle .......absolutely Beautiful....a true Symphony :prayer:

The last one is what I had in 1977. The rest are still here

Here's my prior rig. There are days I sure miss it, but with kids the quad cab works a whole lot better.

Here ya go, 1984 Dodge 360 4bbl 4x4 1-ton, it has 4.10 gears, it was a plow truck and has around 50,***, miles not a fun truck on the interstate, it rides so damn rough and sucks gas but it gets the job done. Here are some "lught duty" pics, picked up a free complete 68 slanty and trans from a FABO member that day :glasses7:

One time I drove to Rock Falls Raceway in WI (about 3 hours each way lol) towing my Satellite to go racing, just as we were getting close to the track I could smell fuel.....then as we entered the track the truck died. :banghead:

A tow rig towed me to the pits and noticed that the fuel pump had gone out. I asked all the other Mopar guys at the track if they had an extra and nobody did. I thought maybe I could drive back into town with the Satellite and get one, but on sunday, everything was closed. So, decided to go racing anyway, my friend was with so he pulled the fuel pump and told me to go have fun, then, after a bunch of passes, I pulled my car back onto the trailer, and pulled the fuel pump off my 340 and slapped it on the 360.....that pump is still on the truck and got us home, we had a good laugh :D

I guess I am lucky and have a son that does this, on call on weekend and a few young guns near by I can call for :help:
I have about 7 friends that drive and transport cars and are on call by the state and county.
They call quite often for a free meal, so I get to enjoy cooking a meal for them.

Here is one of a few that my son uses :coffee2:

Here is my set up. I got it mostly to go out to the desert with my quads but it does fit an A body in there nicely. Pic is of my old V10 Ford. Have upgraded to a diesel sence that pic. The work truck is an 05 Pet with a 475 Cat. Use it to bring hay to the feed store.
