Hey guys--I have a 68 dart 4 door and am going to be driving it on vacation to go mountain biking---i have a friend who has a hitch type bike rack and was thinking that it would be great to use that for the trip but would have to have a hitch welded on the car....is this feasible you think? The rack weighs a royal ton...but my leaf springs and shocks are in great condition--car sits up very nicely in back. so really two questions--is it an ok thing to do and if so where the hell do i have it done? Thanks!

Go to your nearest trailer/hitch store and they should be able to hook you up. It might cost you a couple hundred bucks though. Then you could carry one of those 4 bike racks no problem.

You should be fine with just a bike rack. would think any shop with a welder should be able to do it. Or a place that specilise in trailer work.

I had a couple of '68 B'cudas that had hitches put on them years ago. Both of them had braces that bolted through the spare tire well (underneath the car and through the bottom). A couple more holes were drilled through the bumper itself on either side of the license plate opening. However these hitches weren't the receiver type which I assume you need to use the rack your friend has. As h/c said a hitch store could probably find one the right width for your frame rails and weld it up. They might also be able to fabricate some brackets so you could unbolt it but I would guess the fabrication costs would be kind of high.
If you just want to haul one bike I have a universal bike rack that clamps onto your bumper. It came with a '77 Sport Fury I bought a few years ago but I think it would work on most any bumper. If I can find it I'll post a couple of pics for you.

thanks all. yeah I found the other posting and that answered alot of questions! I will be hauling a minimum of 3 bikes on the trip so i really need to hook this up. I have a trunk rack I used on my modern plastic car but don't really wanna stress the dart's trunk lid in that way! Thanks all!
