Valvoline 20w50 label issue???

I am curious why one would start a new engine on synthetic with the rings not yet broken in.....??

If you're really concerned because of a certain flat tappet cam combo the only oils to use now are the Gibbs or Penn oils that are racing deals. Break them in on that, and then switch to a racing synthetic after a couple thousand miles. Nothing with an API star has what the more aggressive cams need.

I agree that's why it got my attention, one quart had the API SM donut the other 4 didn't ...

They change labels all the time, but anything that has that starburst on it, or the API rating of newer than SJ will not have the zink. It can't legally because one of the changes to SK and newer was a lowering of zink due to catalytic convertor contamination and lack of need for severe friction modifiers. Zink is bad for convertors, and newer engines are designed to not need the additional protection. So if you can find SJ at swap meets it's good. But honestly to buy new oil - spend the money on the good stuff. It's still cheaper than a roller cam conversion over the service life of the engine unless you're daily driving in which case it should probably be roller anyway.

Not directly related to racing engines with flat tappet came, but a friend of mine who is an engineer at Ford told me that when buying a new car, always change out the piss water 5w20 oil immedietly in favor of 10w30! The 5w oils being used in engine applications today are directly related to increased EPA mileage requirements, and offer almost no protection against wear, it's all mandated by HQ to fall under the ever increasing mileage standards put forth by the govt!!

Your friend would really freak if he looks at what Polaris runs in there ATV, UTV, etc. 0w-40.
