VAN OF WAR..... 1/4 mile results

-
AFTER 4 YEARS (just about exact) .......

Goal is to return this van to the track when it opens. Going to tune it some and see if it will go a little less slow. Number to beat is 15.86 in the 1/4 and 10.16 in the 1/8.

Exhaust with a bunch of leaks hurts the tune in my opinion, and makes it difficult to hear and my ears are a part of my tuning too. I replaced the "patchy" exhaust today. Got rid of all the leaks. Sounds good and I'm happy. Now I can continue to tune and see what we can find.

What we removed and what we installed if anyone is interested.......

On to the carb..... made good progress in the short window I had today.... Maybe I'll get to test drive it tomorrow

Wasn't Tuesday, but Thursday.... I was able to go out for a couple mile test run. I think I got the system in place that I want to work with... hopefully I am able to find a little. You gotta find a little more in a heavy vehicle just to find a little... LOL.

Here is this if anyone has any interest on where I went with the carb. From here we look to fine tune a little, by seat of the pants of course.

Now I gotta figure out how I'm going to manage the timing. No window on the bell housing like some vans, and next to impossible to get a light on the marks. I'll figure it out...

Again, I just timed it by ear/feel and drove it like this all this while. And it ran good. But I'm hunting for a hundreth... LOL

You know how my friend Freddie and I got rid of all the leaks in Vixen's exhaust? He's got a smoke machine. He stuck the smoke tip in the tail pipe and you wouldn't believe how many leaks showed up.

You can drill a hole in the bellhousing and mark the converter for TDC. Then get a timing pointer and scale and rivet it on the bellhousing. You can make one if you have to.

We have established a baseline. Now, the tuning will begin. We've been running this for the years just off of what sounded good/seemed right by my ear/feel. And it has run well. Now that we know where we are, we'll try to see what we can find for improvements. The van was at 18* initial, and 36* total, all in by 3100. All of this was more/quicker than I would have guessed. But it's what it was.

Think we got the timing set, ended up backing it off some. Now, on to the carb. 26th is coming fast, and I'm in a super busy time up till that date. I feel good, though, about where we are now. I feel (we all know how that goes..lol) that I could go less slow right now....

We're ready. Now were just waiting for track time! Hopefully next Saturday. For those interested, here is the results, a look at the new spark plug, and now it's like a kid before Christmas, just wait... wait.. wait.. till I can stage !!!!

Looks like we got cooperation with the weather for tomorrow. We'll be just a little late to the party because of obligations but hoping for some improvements tomorrow at the track!
This "tuning together" mini-series was fun!
