I just saw six sided rivets for sale on ebay that are supposedly for VIN tags. Now I wonder if it is legal during a rebuild/restoration for one to remove the VIN while during repairs and bodywork and reattaching the same original VIN when finished? The door VIN on my 65 Formula S looks like its about to fall off anyway, I don't even see any rivets.

I'm not sure what the tag is supposed to look like or how it's attached, but in Colorado you have to document via picture that the tag was originally in place. Next all work done after removal has to be documented with receipts and then tag replaced in the original location.

If any of that gets screwed up, if your lucky you end up with a state assigned I.D. #. If your not lucky you are unable to register the vehicle.

Background, 32 years State Trooper and did certified V.I.N. inspections for a couple of years.

We have the only real deal MoPar NOS VIN rivets in the country period. A lot of people claim to have them they don't. We have bought them all nothings even close. If you are building a correct car these are the only choice. Point blank period we stand behind these 1000 percent. Only 67 up cars had Rivets others were spotted to the drivers post. Real MoPar parts from the late 60s. $50 shipped in the lower 48.

ive lived in Colorado almost my whole life , and I have never once in 35 years ever had to have any one visually inspect any VIN tag for emissions , registration or any other reason. I have registered at the very least 40 cars here.

Vin inspection is done when you are applying for a lost title or if during the course of a collision , etc where the car may be suspected as being stolen for some reason. I am going through the lost title process now.

i had a 70 super bee I bought from a towing company that had no title. I paid 800 for the car and took it home. I paid 200 bucks to apply for a lost title. I copied down the VIN and submitted the paperwork. 8 weeks later I had a title free and clear. never once did any body come out and visually look the car over. it was done completely sight unseen.

How long ago was that? Years ago I did that with a 67 Fairlane but now days it has to be inspected. At least here in ND it does. We have no other inspection. Only for lost titles. Also buying a car from a garage or towing company is different due to mechanic leans, etc. pulling a car out of a tree grove and titling it is far different.

I've done a few times. Honestly rather than pay for the rivets - I modify the hardware store ones. Never had an issue. Once it's in place and everything's done it would take someone very familiar with the rivets themselves to notice, and he'd need some time and a magnifying glass to see anything.
BTW I can remember them being $10/pr. $50 is plain crap IMO. Sorry Cuda - just my opinion.

Some people out there want there cars to be correct. Granted on a joe blow home resto that's a lot of money but on B and E body desirable cars that's not a drop in the bucket. No they are not gold but made of unobtainiam will buy all the extra sets you find..

I just ground the backs off my '66 Coronet vin tag rivets today. It was on the drivers post. So I think they started in '66.
