Problem is with an 87 ram, shouldn't be too specific but I thought i'd see what you guys thought. Put new headlights on a week ago, old ones always worked but had condensation and were kinda dull, new ones had worked fine the day I put them on and had been to my knowledge until this morning. Passenger side works just fine, drivers side isn't on until I hit the high beams, then the drivers side turns on like it should for regular lights, and passenger goes to high beam like it should. Unplugged both headlights and tried again, same deal. Parking lights work just as they should, not sure if that would make a difference. Did the new light go bad or is there something else I should be looking at? TIA FABO!

Hummmm, good question.
I’m not sure myself what the problem could be but I myself would go back to the auto store and show them and ask for another headlight to test. It could be a bad light. But again, I admit, I do t know and this is weird.

Only your multimeter knows for sure, but I'd wager compromised wiring melting/shorting or possibly a melted connector which is not uncommon (especially on Harleys).

I've seen poorly clocked tail lights do that but the one way only head light connector typically nixes accidental orientation changes.

Since my old ones worked just fine i'll probably use one of those to test and see where that goes, ill update

Bad lamp.
Swap side to side and see if fault follows lamp.

First thing to do is swap bulbs side for side. If that provides confusion, try one bulb at a time, leaving one bulb out. If the installed bulb works OK, put IT in the other side

I agree could be a ground problem, bad socket, bad bulb

On a side note, one thing I absolutely DETEST are the "new improved" "inline" park / signal bulbs
