Next time you change spark plug wires, snip a boot off one of the old wires and throw it in your toolbox. the boot can be used to push onto plugs once you crack them loose and take them out by hand. expecially handy around angle plug heads, or hemi's where the plugs are burried.

a piece of rubber hose can also be used.

Dish soap without water on greasy hands for an initial scrubbing remove a lot more of the grime

The top left (drivers side) water pump bolt on many small blocks is easy to break off in the block because of it not being a blind hole in the water jacket. The other 3 are as well but this one or the one just below it that goes through the PS adjuster bracket seem to seize the most often. Before trying to turn them smack the heads of the bolts with a shop hammer or small sledge a few licks. As mentioned with the bleeders you my try to tighten first just barely. If they are still resisting tap while applying torque. Some will break off no matter what but this is often a winner.

Need a custom accelerator pump cam for a holley? Try making one from the head of an old ignition rotor. I need some almost square ones for 6425 2 barrels and this worked well. There is still plenty of meat to grind a custom contour.

Whenever I change wheel cylinders or bleed brakes, once I'm finished I smear a healthy amount of gun grease all over the bleeder, nut and line. Not only does it keep dirt out of the bleeder hole, it also prevents the nut from rusting to the brake line or the wheel cylinder. I have never had an issue with a stripped flare nut or twisted tubing.

This could save you hundreds, possibly thousands of $ dollars

After hitting your hand with a hammer or stabbing yourself with a screwdriver, better yet a nice knuckle sandwich into a bracket while breaking a bolt loose; Instead of throwing whatever tool you happen to have in you hand at the CAR, count to 1 and proceed to throw it at something else. This will save you countless hours repairing the damage you caused and even lessen the guilt of having lost your temper. Remember skin regenerates, bodywork and rare window glass dont.

I have a $12 head lamp(headband type) that I use when working in dark spaces in addition to a droplight. it's great for pin pointing the work area and lighting up the dark spots.

In the droplight I was a compact florescent bulb and it is very durable, I haven't blown it yet, while the conventional bulbs would blow with a firm bump. I am saving money by not having to replace the bulb all the time, plus saving energy too..

Solo brake bleeding trick. Lightly finger tighten the bleed screws and I do mean LIGHTLY. This will allow air to escape while acting as a check valve to the more viscous fluid. You should feel the pedal slowly drop as the air escapes and then get stiff as the fluid tries to pass.

Carb insulator type base gasket tip for re-use. Swapped a Holley for an AFB the other day and didn't have a new insulator gasket. The top area was embossed with the bottom of the carter carb so it would not seal on the Holley. A quick trip to the belt sander flattened out the top of the insulator gasket nicely but just for security I added one thin base gasket on top of the insulator. Make sure the gasket is indexed the same as before so it fits the intake perfectly.

Easy off oven cleaner will safely remove paint from plastic parts.

Mr Clean will remove vacuum plated chrome from plastics.

An old crock pot filled with soapy water makes a good small parts cleaner.

Rim polishing made easy when you have badly weathered rims:
PS - Just be darn sure you have good jack stands under the axle and blocks in front of and in back of the front tires, then crank the car up, put it in gear, raise the idle and go to town. A little water and some wet or dry. These had about 30 years of oxidation on them but they look practically new now. You stop when the rims get so shinny that you can see yourself.

What grit did you finally stop at? Or did you go to 000 wool?

I stopped at 1200 grit because I didn't want them real (mirror) shiny. I was going for the old skool look. But believe me they polish up real fast using the heavier grit and wet or dry with water
