Well she is finally here. Going to pressure wash today and get the animal leftovers out. Not sure where to go after that?

Another vote for firing the engine briefly. Is this a stock 318 or did someone (your brother maybe) go thru it previously? I'm usually all about working with what you have but in this case, if you're going to put in $ to redo the engine, I'd seriously consider finding a running 360 and slide that in. Nothing against 318s but, if you can add 42 more cubic inches for the same cost as doing the 'teen, I'd be looking for a 360. You say you have a junkyard next to your work so check with them - maybe they have a good running 360 in a wrecked car/truck? Regardless of what you do, you are going about things in an organized and methodical manner. Good on ya! Keep the '67 Plymouth shop manual - as mosleyme said, the Barracuda was an offshoot of the Valiant product line and they share most common parts.

What part of the Great PNW are you in? I'm in the Cd'A/Post Falls/Spokane area if you are close and ever need an extra pair of hands.
Thank you.

Check out Dead dodge garage on the Utube. Jamie is doing an engine swap, electrical replacement on a 69 mexican dart as we speak. May be some useful information for you there.
Hahahaha i have watched hours and hours of jamie, my brother actually knows him since we are all from the same town. funny story some guy was trying to buy the car from my brother so he could turn a profit on it to jamie.

I do like his videos, except when he says essentially 13 times. Lol.

I have a 68 notchback… my favorite car ( at the moment) lol. I rebuilt the 318 with a mild cam and closed chambered 273 heads. Has lots of spice yet still very reliable.. runs like a sewing machine
I am venturing something similar i think, then i think why not stroke it? Then im like well if you are going to pay to stroke it, why not just get a bigger engine? I think, i am going something along your route, maybe some aluminum heads, or if i can find some 273s, cant remember what that changes everything to as far as compression.

Oh yeah, there is a starter, i was looking on wrong side of engine. Is there normally such an oper area to the bell housing? I feel like i am missing a cover down there and i can see way too much flywheel?

Thats so cool of you to offer your help.. I am on the west side of Wa. And thought the same thing.. also I have a friend that is swapping my mexican 318 for a ridiculous 360 that did high sevens on the eighth mile…I am a fan of the 360, since 340’s have gotten so expensive .. also 360’s are totally under rated.

Haha, yes, to each there own . Jamie has worked on 3 of my cars over the years including the green 68barracuda notch back a year ago, and now the black 69 dart gts from mexico. He has done me solid every time… he is trying to get away from that now.. doesnt want to work on others projects… anyway if I can help in anyway, let me know

318's were the workhorse of Mopar's LA engines before the transition to 360's. You could find them in virtually everything - and there is nothing wrong with them as many here can attest. I don't know what the yard next to his work gets for a 360, but our local yard (Pull-N-Save) charges $300 for a complete engine (air cleaner to oil pan, distributor, starter, alternator, fan & fan clutch, exh manifolds, brackets) plus a $27 core charge so a $327 360 makes the most sense to me if his 318 needs more than that. It will be interesting to learn if anything was previously done to the 318 in the Post #11 picture.

I totally agree

Yeah he remembers what the polysphere i have in the truck is out of, but not the one in the car. Need to look at the numbers i guess. Although the car itself only has 76k.

So, how many of the 76K odometer miles are on the current 318? Sorry, I didn't go back and reread everything but what was the car born with?

It came with a slant 6? Or straight, either way, i think the guy my brother bought it from put the 318 in it. Supposedly this dude worked at the dodge dealership where the car was traded into by the original owner. He got it, then sold to my brother in like 89 or 90.
