Well she is finally here. Going to pressure wash today and get the animal leftovers out. Not sure where to go after that?

-
She still has most of the factory corrosion stuff? In the wheel well.

I am thinking so i have money for other nice things, i am going to just pull the one in it out, go through it, and update a bit and put her back. Going to be spending a small fortune just in glass and seals.

That's a great plan. i wish i had done that with mine :)

Spark plugs sitting in position, not too shabby.

So with plugs out and copious amounts of the 40, i was able to turn the crank pulley by hand 1 full turn b4 i realized it is kinda sharp. But she moves.

There are FAR better things to put down the sparkplug holes...ATF has been my go to for some time now. But PB Blaster is good too.

But good deal...now use a 1/2" ratchet with an 1 1/4" socket (usually - i do have a 340 that has a 1 1/16" bolt) and short extension to turn the motor via the crank bolt for a couple of rotations with ATF or light engine oil in the cylinders...again, I prefer ATF cuz it does a good job of working into tight spaces of sticky rings and when you do fire it up it burns off pretty good.

Looks like a cool project with a great history. I wish I had my older brother's 69 Road Runner from back in the day.

I'd start by pre-treating and power washing the WHOLE car. Then when dry, N95 mask and shop vac. Then step back and assess what you have.

The 318 that's in there should be fun with a good cam, intake and headers. Especially with a four speed. That's the way I've driven mine for the last 3 years. Good luck!

Lol, i have went through a huge can of pb blaster already. Any bolt or nut or anything that i even thought i might touch got sprayed.

I mostly did the vacuuming but i 4got my mask, which i heard an ear full from the wife about. I think i am not going to pressure wash till after i get the engine out. I had to get the tires holding air so i could roll it out of the carport to wash it anyway. Of course the shopvac stopped sucking half way through.

you are probably going to deal with a lot of rusty parts, make a tub of this and it will clean them in like 6-10 hours... and it's cheap

Yeah i am dumb when it comes to carburetors. Only one i ever had really was a single barrel on my 84 accord . I was going to do some deep learning b4 i even tried to install something.

Get a starter from a 90s model Dodge Dakota:More Information for ACDELCO 3371096

That's just an example...I'd get one out of a JY. If you go looking, it can be found on every Dodge Truck/Van with the 3.9/5.2/5.9 in the yard from 91-94 or 95 and maybe others. Plus you can get the bolt/nut you are probably missing. Around here JY get $25-$50 for them.

Is the intake a 2bbl? If it is, a BBD is what you need. (This next bit will NOT be popular). I would grab an amazon one like this: https://www.amazon.com/KIPA-Carburetor-Chrysler-Engines-Mounting/dp/B0793HFNV4?tag=fabo03-20

It's about $70 and will get you running...I don't know about you, but a running motor gets me motivated. It's a weakness.

I have been running this carb for over a year now on my truck. It has been good so far AND for YOUR car I would use it as a STOP GAP until you decide how to proceed as far as induction...if you go 4bbl it will obviously involve an intake swap -- or you can run this one UNTIL you can find a proper NOS or send yours off to be built* or find a good actual Carter BBD that has been re-done by an actual carb shop: Carburetor Specialist, rebuilder supplier of throttle body and parts

*I only say this because you say you don't know much about carbs AND almost invariably old BBDs need to have the throttle shaft hole re-bushed and that's tricky at home.

Intake is a 4bbl. I dont shop amazon unless i cannot find it elsewhere or need it right away.

I was thinking about 1 of the no names on ebay as far as carb to get going, because yes a running car just gets more love.

OK. I prefer the Carter clones or the Autolite 4100 clone for square bore intakes over the Holley 1850 clones...lotsa little reasons but both because they don't have gaskets below the fuel level and the carter afb clones also have no power valve...so that's 1st choice for me...but carbs are like a lot of things and will get folks triggered real quick.

Spreadbore is a whole other can of worms...quick and easy to get is a Qjet clone.

Same caveats from my previous post on carbs apply for the above suggestions, unless you have a specific plan and KNOW the carb you want -- then have at it. From what i have seen 4bbl china junk is about 2x the BBD price, but I have zero first hand knowledge to offer on the quality, etc of the 4bbl stuff.

Also, if you have a carter clone in the trunk or something, that's one to learn how to rebuild on -- easiest 4bbl, IMO.

I would run out to the JY and grab a starter. Once you get a starter, clean the points and make sure they are opening as the motor turns over. Then hook up a spark plug to the coil wire and crank the engine...you should get fire at the plug. If you do, then start thinking fuel. JMO.

have read a ton of good stuff bout the 4100s especially the summit copy

Here's one more about the summit copy.

I had a 600cfm (?) one on a 1985 D350 with a NP435...it was EASY to tune, held the tune well, and gave that little 318 in there all it needed to do real work around the farm -- hauling hay on a 30ft trailer in particular.

I would use one again for sure.

BBD? Luckily my local junk yard is right next to my work i may stop and see if i can get a starter.

BBD is the 2bbl Carter.

Edelbrock bought the rights to make the Carter AFB (in the 80s?) and also make an AVS which I know nothing about. All I have messed with is the Carter AFB and the Edelbrock version...simple to rebuild.

I know you don't use amazon, but this is an example of the AFB: https://www.amazon.com/1405-Carburetor-Compatible-Edelbrock-Performer/dp/B0DH4M2XP2/?tag=fabo03-20

I would assume you can find the same thing on the 'bay. I am not finding any 4100 clones.

First Autolite 4100 that came up:

https://www.carburetorcenter.com/product-page/1961-1963-ford-autolite-4100-carburetor-remanufactured

here is a link to the summit carbs we mentioned:

https://www.summitracing.com/search...&ptr_oos=4&SortBy=Default&SortOrder=Ascending

That might be a "forever carb." Way more $$$ than when I bought mine.

Yeah they can be pretty pricey new.thanks for the links, making it easy on me. I just got notified my manuals showed up today, so hopefully i wont feel mostly lost taking her apart. I tell you these old cars are sooooo much easier to work on than say a mid 2000s bmw, or even a gen 4 ram. Seems like a honda and the 10mm, every bolt is a 9/16 and every nut seems to be a 1/2.

I may start cheap and small, and once i am comfortable that i know what is what maybe get the forever carb.
