Just spent $200 and 3hrs picking up a 1972 400 block that I was told was a runner. Get it home and pull the intake!

that DOES suck! oh ya,it ran...he failed to mention the water consumption problem.
makes the engine I got with the thrust bearing/crank torn up look great.

That's enough to piss you off.

I'm going to go make a drink.

Man...........in the seventies a friend and I junked two cars in that shape. One was a Forulua S Commando. Managed to salvage the heads and intake. That was before they were worth anything

Another was a 335 hp 383 someone had stuck in a 65 B body. He said the block was supposed to be cracked, and there was no coolant, but the oil looked OK. I decided "we" had found a gem. I soon found out otherwise, LOL when I started hosing water into the rad. I still don't know why the oil looked good

What does the seller have to say about it???

The guy has another short block. It's a 76 but he said to keep this one and come get the other. Young guy getting rid of an entire shops worth cause he has a baby on the way. I don't think he knew. Will see how the other turns out

Stay with the earlier years . 76-78 have the liter upper end.

I'm sorry to see that . not sure where you are ,local speed shop here in northern Indiana they have a 383 fresh rebuild he told me $1200 and that's negotiable

That does suck, but at least he's giving you another one. He's trying to make it right. Caint ask for much more than that.

I have read conflicting info on the different year blocks. Some say they got thinner castings in the later years. Others say it don't matter.

Drill and pin the ends, grind and braze the crack?

Did you ever think about buying a prepped block and spinning assembly from Hughes.
That's where I'm heading or Hensley for my 499 build.

Take tools and pull the intake off the second one and inspect it before you take it. Other posters are right, at least he is trying to make it right. And if he does, this cracked block would add nicely to a scrap iron pile you could take to the local scrap place and get a little cash for it.

Or better yet, clean it , paint it, and put it in your living room and use the cylinders to hold bottles of wine, and put a glass end table top on it. Classy!!!
