what am I missing?

do you have stock exhaust manifolds, did you remove the heat riser in the right manifold because if it stuck closed it will cause pinging.
 
i want to apologize for typing 5,000 rpm i meant 2500 . i am going thru the list of suggestions so far the biggest problem i have found is how bad the pistons had gotten carbon on them . im cleaning them now and will go from there . thx to all for help jfj.
 

Well there you have it; 32* at 2500 is a problem.You might have saved yourself a lot of work if you had posted that correctly,originally.Go back to posts 16,19 and22.
-So you took the heads off? that might have been a bit premature. They sell chemical solutions to decarbon those chambers on running engines. They work very well.
-Since the heads are off, nows the time to measure everything and calculate the C/R
