Hi guys,

Need to ask what alt to get for my SB stroker.

I don't mind making brackets for a non-Mopar alternator but I'm not sure what alt or what amperage alt to get.

Will be running all the usual plus:
Amp, Mp3 player, subwoofer, 2 speakers and 2 tweeters, alarm system which includes auto locking from the key.

Preferably 1 wire and internally regulating

Any ideas???

HELP

Well if you don't have dual fans(60 amps) or fuel pump(10 amps) or MSD(10 amps) a stock alt. should do just fine.

I'm probably going to use EZI-EFI with their electric fuel pump, a 16 inch fan or two 10 duals plus ICE Ignition system.

Can I use 100 amp or should I go 140???

Thanks for the reply!

The only correct way is to take all your electrical accessories (ignition, Amp, Fans , EFI, lights, etc) add up there current draw (if rated by watts divide the wattage by 14 for amps) and add 20-30% and that's waht you need for an alternator.

Don't forget the stock wiring won't be capable of handling the output of the alternator, it's barely adequate for a stock 60 amp alternator.

I will be using the ISIS Wiring system with the car.

I guess I'm looking at a 140 amp alternator at least

Whats everybody else running?

Mine is a 65 amp one. Runs my MSD, headlights, and 600 watt stereo amp just fine. There is nothing else in the car though, no heater, no electric fan, no a/c, nothing.

Oh I'll have a heater as well but no A/C. The list just gets longer doesn't it.

Try a Tuff Stuff from Don at FBO (www.4secondsflat.com)

Internally regulated and 1 wire...nice alternators. 100amp.

I'd think that it would do the job. If not Don will probably steer you in the right direction if he doesnt think 100amp is enough. But I'd bet it would be...

I want to use some of KRC Powers stuff and fashion a water pump serpentine pulley and alternator brackets but the alternator cant be massive then

If I could do 100amp but I doubt it I'd go with this or else these:

and get a 1.6 inch serpentine pulley

That Mopar alternator seems like a nice piece. It's one wire and has an internal voltage regulator, meaning you can get rid of that box on the firewall. I have never seen that one before...Wonder why that thing hasn't been mentioned before on here...

WE had one car we had to put a 160 AMP in it. At idle it was 120 AMP.

Exactly. With electric fans and pump I would pay attention to the low speed alternator output otherwise you will find that your voltage drop at idle will be excessive (like 10 volts). IIRC only the larger alternators put out significant amps at idle. It was awhile ago now so the details are fuzzy but I used a high output Dodge truck Denso alternator.

EFI *really* changes the picture. I'd go for a 140 watt with an injected car. Just how big of an amp were you planning to run?

You can always get an under/over?? drive pulley for the alternator. I put one in my jeep, i get more power at idle now since it spins faster..

I wont be able to run an overdrive pulley on the alternator as I want to run a 4 inch water KRC crank pulley with a (4 inch to run off crank and) 5 inch water pump pulley to run the alt. Custom water pump pulley of course-I'll have to get it made

im using a gm alt. it comes off a 88 chevy caprice. its rated at 105amp that prenty for stereo, fans, fuel pumps, lights, etc. and most of all its cheap. plentiful

looking to get this alt as well. i keep seeing people talk about the factory wiring not being able to handle a higher output alt. but if the alt has a voltage regulator isnt it only going to put out what is needed? so if im using all stock accessories, lights, heater, windshield wipers, i wont over load the wiring? just curious on some clarification about this.

so any news on this new mopar internally regulated alternator? I might just start a new thread on this one...

I will be using a 140 amp powermaster one wire but I am running aftermarket wiring and tons of hungry electronics.

Hi, the tuff stuff is I believe the same as the one we got from 4secondsflat.com for our Jensen Interceptor, although ours was chrome. Those folks are quite nice. I would probably prefer stock finish on my personal Mopars. It sure keeps the fans and battery humping, but still suffers a little from low rpm v droop. Not nearly as bad of v droop as the stock unit but still noticeable. I have not measured the voltage at idle (600-700 engine rpm).
