What do these wires under the dash go to? Why does the relay get VERY hot when the key is on?

Bob, that is one of the flasher units and they do get kind of warm sometimes just from using the signals or flashers because they rely on a bi metal element heating to make it contact and then not, then contact again for the flash function.
You would probably feel it clicking if you are holding it and have one of the signals on.
There is normally two of those (one for signals and one for emergency flashers)

That said, it could also have a short in it.
The regular bi metal ones are pretty cheap if you want to try a new one, or you could get the electronic style that doesn't rely on heat to flash.
This style is an electronic on/off switch and the don't slow the signals at idle either since they don't require a load to flash.

that is the delay timer thingy for the interior lamps. Most of the old electronics operated on heat cycles. I don't know just how hot this piece should get.

Oh crap, I guess I was wrong.
Could you tell from the wire colors?

Oh duh, the twin yellows.

Thanks. I’ll try to replace it but I needed to know what it was first. What’s the best name to call it when searching for a new one?

As far as I know it would be the "Interior lighting delay timer"

Or "courtesy lamp delay/timer/module" I really don't know exactly. Someone here does know and can state where they bought one recently. That I know for sure.

Found an exact photo match on eBay indicating its the ignition key light delay timer. Funny since I have no key light... yet

If my memory serves, it holds the dome lamp on also. Leaving the door open for extended period is what would overheat them and shorten their life. The key in ignition and turned cancels its operation? I think that's correct.

Its a Time delay relay still available at the dealer Mopar part # 2889565 around $20
Also used on Diplomats, Furys, Fifth Ave until 1989 and maybe others.
