[WANTED] What can of Duster can I get for 23K

Hello, 1st post. I’d like to purchase a 1970 or 1971 340 duster automatic. I have a budget of $23,000. What should I expect to get for this type of money? Matching numbers, Options, how stock, etc..? Looking for something to drive that’s not showroom quality but decent. Any guidance would be appreciated.

For a 1970 or 1971 Duster 340 - you probably need to double your budget if you want a car that is already done / restored at least at an amateur level.

You would be fortunate - maybe lucky - to find a decent 1970/71 318 Duster for $23,000 - that is the market today for a V8 equipped 1970/71 Duster.

If you could adjust your expectations you possibly could find a very nice 1973/74 Duster with either a 340 or 360 - for a number approaching the 23K budget.
Last spring a really nice 1973 triple black (Vinyl roof) 340 4 speed Dart Sport which was garaged for most of it's life sold for about $25K and it was easily worth the price.

Earlier year Darts are available but personally inspect --- the rear wheel wells are not as accommodating for larger wheels / tires.

Welcome .. Being in Florida you should be able to find a solid (frame,floors, trunk) car. Very important to get the best car to start from, then work up from there. 70/71 higher end of the food chain, but not impossible to find one in the 20's (IMHO). You should be able to find a good "driver quality" duster for 20's, that may need some TLC. The economy may be on your side, if you look daily for a buy. Also your ability to do the work needed, has a lot to do with your purchase. $150/ hr to have someone do repairs, adds up real fast, so be honest with yourself about your ability to wrench. I always hear about matching numbers, better off finding what you want, and build it the way you want, not thinking of resale value of a matching number whatever, especially for short money. Good luck .... PS> I sold this always rust free TN car for 15k. yesterday. '75, 318 ..with the beak, brings value down, even this super solid example.

A matching numbers car

A real 340 car

A "29" body

Not Stock, no matching numbers, 360 ps, pb air, auto under 25K Nice Paint some newer parts.

I ended up buying the car (21K). It’s a 1971 Plymouth Valiant Scamp. Came stock with a 318 V8 but since was replaced with a 360 4 barrel with HiTEch fuel injection, mild cam with a 904 automatic. Also has Power Steering, Power Brakes and Air Conditioning. Car appears to be in good shape, no rust, nice paint, like new interior (Seats &Floor Carpeting), straight lines. Weather stripping, glass and trim all nice.The fellow I bought this from is a BMW long time current mechanic. He bought the car 2 years ago and has updated several items and is providing some new parts he hasn’t had time to install. He opened up the engine a bit and said things inside look like new and must have recently been rebuilt. Here is his list on new items he added-replaced.

New tires all around, New brake drums and brake shoes on all 4 wheels, Added new speakers on interior rear deck where there was just holes, New battery with added trickle charger, new bushings in the front end. Has included a complete re-build kit for the front end (some of the items aren’t needed as they are OK on the car now) new ball joints, lower and upper tie rod ends, and outer sleeves all billet. He also added new KYB shocks up front and Gabriel Hijack air shocks in the back.
