Aftermarket. Could you tell what it was connected to? Any logo/ printing readable?

There were hundreds, probably thousands, of little doo dads marketed. Headlight "left on" warnings. Add on wiper delay. Simple as well as ridiculous alarms. Various tach adapters for CDI, etc.

On and on.

Thanks for your answer, no, there is nothing printed on it, i can t remember anymore where it was.

tell us year model and options of the car.
Let us see any remaining connectors on the wires

Certainly looks like a hot and ground, and then the contacts.....based purely on WAG, so a relay for something. Doesnt look factory to me, but ive yet to see it all.

If the wires were shorter it looks like an early universal voltage regulator that bolts to the alternator. I could be wrong.

I thought of that too. Frankly, with no idea, the best thing is the circular file

Thank's for the comments, I'm rewiring the entire car anyway. It would just be interesting to know what it is.

Maybe for convertible top, maybe a time delay for the key switch lamp, maybe a relay for heated back glass or something to do with a map light or aftermarket like intermittent wirepers, or something for the stereo amp.

If you reallllly want to know what 'it' is, you can do this:
- it is probably a simple two contact relay
- one set of wires for the relay coil, other set for the contacts
- measure the two brown wires & then the two black wires for resistance.
- if you get resistance [ likely to be 50-200 ohms ], those wires are the coil wires.
- if measure open cct on the other set of wires, should be the contacts
- apply 12v to the coil wires & you should measure zero or close to zero ohms on the remaining two wires. You may hear or feel the relay 'click'.
