I will have my heads off soon, and I'll be taking them in soon. I have a fresh cam on an otherwise stock 360 motor, so I'll be having them put in new springs. Other then that since the heads are off, what other work might you suggest I get done? I thought about milling the heads for better compression.
I'll have about $500.00.

Thanks!

I'll assume a mild cam upgrade on a stock low comp. 360.

If the valve guides are good and new seals are in hand, performance wise I would just get a good performance valve job. Ask him how much to cut the seat and back cut the valves. Low lift improvements are your best bet.

$500 aint much to work with... If the heads are whipped, you're better leaving them alone than spending a dime. Because really fixing them will take more than that. Have them install the springs and replace the seals and run them.

I think Aerohead sells some 360 castings for $599 with 2.02 stainless valves and decent springs already on them. Might save you some money in the long run.

It'd be worth having them checked for cracks. If they're still on the motor, you might want to leak them down to make sure you dont have any leakage past the valves.

What shoud you do???
This is what I did. Milled .030 cost $40 and will add about .5 comp.. Put new bronze alloy guides in $160. Had a preformance cut done to seats and valves $148. What you can do for yourself with a dremel is to blue the intake flange put the gasket on the face and use a metal scribe and scribe the inside of the ports where the gasket lines up..then feather out the material to the scribed lines for better flow.

I have to agree with you moper. I wouldn't spend much on them and save my $500 to stick into a set of heads that I wanted.

definatly do what DOG said gasket match the heads to the intake to ellininate restriction you can do this without paying cash to a speed shop...make sure you figure out the compression you want to achieve before milling the heads it is all relevant...try to stay approx. 9.2:1 to 10:1 you will never have aproblem with gas...pump gas that is 93 octatane all that is available...have fun and this is just my opinion....

All hail the North East price tags. I haven't paid those prices in a while, a long while.

lol... I could find the work cheaper. But like everything else, I know what else the cheaper costs come with. Even in these tight money times, this place is moving into an expanded and self owned building next month. The valve grinder itself cost more than most shops' seat cutting equipment. Rottler CNC block center, Serdii valve grinder and seat equipment, Superflo bench and dyno, plus 5 guys that really know what they're doing. It dont come cheap unfortunately. But, they give me what I want for quality, and the results show it. I'm satisfied paying for the result.
