What size 17 in rim will work on 68 Dart Converitble?

-
If you want a 245 on the front with 17x8's and a 73+ BBP disk brake set up you need a minimum of 5" of backspace. Minimum. That would put the outside of the tires even with the 275's on my car, and I don't have any extra space. With a 4.5" backspace the tires would be touching the fenders, no clearance at all. Most 17x8's can be run with up to about 5.6" of backspace. There are quite a few members running 17x8" bullit rims, those have a 5.72" backspace and usually require a 1/8" spacer to clear the suspension parts.

245/40/17's are really short too, that's only a 24.7" tall tire. 245/45/17 would be a much better fit at 25.7".

I went and double checked my front a 17x8 rim will work just not with a tire. The wheel and tire combo I have is 15x7 with 3 3/4 backspace, with a 195 60 r15 up front I remembered I tried to put a 225 60 r15 up front it wouldn't clear with that backspace. I do think I can clear a 205 60 r15. So either I keep looking or I try to make a 17x7 rambler with 4" backspace work with a small tire up front. Or I keep looking for a rim with 5" of backspace that I like. Is there any place you can shop for wheels online by size like SummitRacing? Where you can put in what dimensions you want. It then give several options.

With a 7" wide rim and a 3 3/4" backspace you won't fit much of a tire at all. To run 225's you need at least a 4.25" backspace with a 7" rim and the 73+ disks.

Summit does let you filter your searches, you can filter by bolt pattern, wheel diameter, width, even backspace and offset.

That's one of the reasons I wanted to change wheels and go to 17" wheels to put a better tire up front. Summit is where I normally look just not a lot of selection for 5" backspace in a 17" wheel. I'll keep looking to find a wheel I like.

There isn't much in a 5" backspace. You'll have to widen your search to include 5" up to about 5.6", and plan on running a spacer in the back.

These are the rims I run on my challenger, but in a 17x8 and 5.25" backspace. With an A-body 8 3/4 and BBP axles a 5.25" backspace may clear on some cars with stock springs, or maybe a small spacer.

That's the wheel I'm running in the 15" version.

Thank you for the Awesome comment my 16 year old daughter and I are having fun with this car.

Not a chance those YO rallye's will fit on a Dart, the backspace is all wrong. 17x8 with a 4.25" backspace. I'm surprised you can get away with a 245 on the front even with a barracuda's wider fenders.

Patience and research and you can make anything fit!

I finally had time to get new wheels on the Dart the fronts are 17x8 with 5in. backspace. The front tires are 245 40 R17. The rear are the same size rims with 245 45 R17

That looks real good. What wheels? You started out looking at Ramblers. This chrome wheels look good with that trim on a dark car.

They are Scott Drake Mustang wheels. They where built by Rev wheels

Love it!
Been reading a lot of threads on 17" wheels for A Bodies.
I bought Year One staggered set with the same size tires for our 69 Fastback project and then read a lot of posts that created some doubt if they would work on our cars. 17x9 275/40 rear and 17x8 245/45 front
Can put those doubts to rest! They look great on your car.
Just got the rear end and front suspension parts together for our FB, so just now getting close to being able to test fit.

Have had the same size on my E-Body for a few years now. Year One did a great job on these wheels.

Lower it a 1/2" in the front and tell me if the fronts still clear...

I think they will look great on your 69 FB here are a couple more close up pics. great job on the 69 my hats of to you guy's that cat strip a car down like that. Daughter and I just did the 2017 Hot Rod Power Tour the car ran great first time out on the road for that long.
your 70 looks awesome!

I'm in the same process with my 69 Valiant. What I have come up with is 17 x 7 for the front and 17 x 8 for the rear. Now for the tires Front: 205/45 or 205/50 and for the Rear: 245/45 or 245/50. I guess you can guess that I am fan of big and little tires. I just like the look. The Valiant has a spring 1/2 relocation with an Abody rear in 4 1/2" bolt pattern. Wheels that I have been looking at are the AR Rambler package with tires, or the AR Torque Thrust black M wheels. Like them both.

With a wider wheel, you can fit a larger tire in the back. I'd say a 275 at tops.
