What vehicles had a HIPO 318?

Wow AJ/formulaS,

What a reply that was indeed.
As a 440 guy I know you can run smog comp. down to mid elevens.

So what is the magic comp. number for a teener?
Then which cam will work best for that comp.??

My Moparmate ran his teener down to mid elevens but he keeps hid cards close to his chest!
Lets have some brotherly love and a few pointers please.:mob::poke::rofl:

This 318 engine popped up for sale near me for $140 bucks. I immediately noticed the windage tray and was intrigued. I never knew the 318 came with a windage tray as I never knew they made any performance packages for the 318s.

Is this something from the factory or added later on? I also notice the timing chain looks like a double roller, so probably a modified engine.

What years and vehicles would have included a factory windage tray in a 318? I was thinking maybe police cars?

I know the picture of the engine stamping is super blurry. I am trying to get a clearer image from the seller.

I tried my best with the photo. Looks like a cast crank? with a forged balancer, double timing chain, windage tray, non 340 heads and 318 block.

Look at the main bolts on the caps that hold the windage tray. If they have 2 hardened washers between the cap and bolt head, they have been added on. If they have no washers, they are factory and the round boss that the little bolts screw into will be taller than the same bolts that came in a 340 or 360. The 340 or 360 windage tray main bolts will not tighten up when using a 273/318 cap unless you use 2 hardened head bolt washers. If they are true 318 windage tray main bolts, you'd better hang onto them because they are like Hen's teeth!

The problem with AJ's over focus on Compression is he never accounts for the main maker of Torque and Power which is Volumetric Efficiency generally when you add torque/power to any part of the powerband like adding intake exhaust cam heads etc.. Is filling the cylinders better at certain rpms, adding compression just makes even more power from the cylinder filling. You can't compress what's not in the cylinder.

Right around 1974 they did make a police addition 31 8 which I feel you probably are looking at. They were put in Dodge Dart four doors. The Eugene Police department ran them for several years and they had quite a reputation for being little hot rods some police officers told me they were the fastest and quickest cars that they had up to that point and specially in that era.
So did Salt Lake City P.D. They also came with 11x2'' rear brakes from the "C" body on a 8 1/4'' rear.

Never quite thought of it that way 273. You actually can't compress what's not there, great point!

The smog head design of the 70's was corrected with the 302 head (80's).

This head design was used on the 273 Commando engine from memory.
But being a small capacity engine, it had small intake runners.

So fitting 340 and 360 heads on a teener can cause comp. isssues indeed!
As has been said many times before, you must change to a Zero deck piston at least.

Quench is rarely talked about these days with crap gas.
But squeezing the mixture down to approx 50 thou, pushes the flame towards the plug.

Try doing that with any smog head...:poke:
The 302 has large pushrod holes that deter porting at the entrance.:wtf:

I’ve never got a reply from the seller to even buy it. I am waiting.

I was hoping to get a better image of the casting #s.

I’m still waiting on the seller to even respond to me. They have a 5.0 star rating on marketplace place so maybe I’ll get a response.

If it is the infamous 'copcar' engine its a great find.
596 heads are the best of a bunch and very desirable indeed.

In theory they have factory hardened seats and 340 port sizes.
This combo was frowned upon for many a years but Mopar put a 360 head on a teener!

340 cast crank and heavy 340 rods.
But did they use the weighted balancer and torque converter???

They clearly say 340 cast crank 3721160, but I think the 79 318 engine has the same external damper too?
