I have a 65 Dart with a 273 Auto 904 and need a transmission tail shaft seal , where can i buy 1 ? thanks

ebay for about $5. For the housing or where the slip yoke goes in?

I called my local NAPA store and they gave me the following: 15535, NAPA oil seal, $13.49. Others can confirm or denigh this being correct.

Is it the same seal for 65 ball and trunion transmission vs the 66 and up Slip shaft?

The tailshaft seal is different between 65 and 66 904 trans. 65 has the flange on the trans, 66 has the slip yoke. I have been searching online , but haven't found the correct seal, yet. When I get to the shop, I will see if I have the part number for the correct seal, or measure a new seal, and locate one by dimensions. The ones on rock auto are not correct for the 65 904 trans

The mopar part number is 2464 854 for 65 A904 trans
The part number for a 60-64 A904 is 1942 401

OK, I located a source.
Home -Fatsco Transmission Parts
Their part number for the 65 A904 is SEL-3189Q Price is $12.00 plus shipping
Their part number for 60-64 A904 trans is SEL-3142Q Price $10.00 plus shipping

That's what I was thinking and why I posed the question earlier.

I just noticed that you posted different seals for 64 and older and 65. The original poster has a 65 . The 65's still had a ball and trunion but aparently take the same seal as the slip yoke? Maybe because the 65 904 was redesigned to do away with the b&t output and the pushbutton?
Seals are 1960 to 1964 with the flanged output shaft. seal changed in 1965, still had the flanged output shaft. Seal changed again in 1966 to the slip spline output shaft. I'm not sure if it ever changed again. As for Fatsco, having the seal, I called them before posting, to get the part numbers, pricing, and make sure they still had them. Their trans kit, has extra parts to cover expanded years.
65 was changed to do away with the pushbutton, but still used cables The 65 is a one year only trans, and does have differences from the 64 trans.

65 valiant 273 with a 904 torqueflite. Fatsco is the place to find the seal

That screen shot from Fatsco in not correct. 1965 TF904 (at least in "A" bodies) did not have a slip in yoke, it still used the flange. Just a FYI: 64 and 65 used different extension housing rear seals. However the oem part number (2464 482) referenced is correct for 1965. The seal part number for 1960-1964 is 1942 401

EDIT: Post #12 I listed the wrong part number for the 1965 seal. The correct numbers are in this post.

Hi Charlie. Would you say then that the 65 has a flange that the driveshaft slips into at the trans , and not a “yoke”. Like the yoke that’s at the tail end of the shaft as it meets the rear diff? I’m crossing my fingers that Fatscos terminology is wrong and the part is correct, because I murdered that seal while removing it. That seal I showed is currently in the mail to me now. Thx in advance for any feedback and advice…Mike

The 65 trans has a flange that bolts onto the output shaft, just like the 64 trans. However the bearing and seal at the end of the tailshaft housing on the 65 trans is different then the 60-64 parts.
The part number that is listed in the screen shot (2464 482) is correct for the 1965 trans. Fatsco is used to be very good at supplying the correct parts for the obsolete transmissions. When I lived in NJ, I delt with them on a regular basis, but that was 30 years ago. I haven't bought from them for a few years, so don't know how they are now.
These are pictures of a 1965 trans https://earlycuda.org/techdocs/ConvertFrontUJoint.pdf

I am very grateful for the advice and photos! I was lucky enough to have met some of the early cuda valiant folks at Carlisle earlier this year. Enough can’t be said about the information that they and this forum make available for our community. This information would be otherwise lost. Thanks again to everyone!
