White smoke floods inside of car when I turn on heater.

That box is only held in there with one hanger and like 3 studs. I thinkit will take longer to take the seat out than to drop the box. I've taken a few out in the dead of winter. Not crazy about it but you do whatcha gotta do. And really, how much can it cost to get it done at a shop? It's not rocket-science, any mechanic should be ably to do this very minor job.

How about this how about let's teach this newbie how to fix his car correctly and how to be proactive in such? I understand he's in a bit of a pinch but most people don't use these old nostalgic cars as their number one and only mode of transportation? So maybe I'll have to read back and find out that this guy is in extreme pinch or a must drive his car no matter what.

Fair enough. He says he needs the car for a movie shoot it will be in. I agree that the Bars Leak pellet crap does nothing more than plug everything. I believe the Aluma Seal will get him by to do the movie shoot and fix it correctly agter.

LOL you would think this would be a pretty low budget movie after depend on this guy to bring some broken down beater across town? How about if the producer just pays for a tow truck to bring it to the shoot? Ah just run a new really long hose into the car, coil it up on the seat and back out to the water pump.
That'll keep ya warm.

"6 hours" to R&R a heater core in a non AC car?
More like an hour if a person already knows about the J hook.

And if the J-hook ain't seized, cuz that can be a PITA to fix if you don't catch it, before you hit it with the ratchet.But when that happens I just bend the hook at the top and get the box out, and into a warm place to fix it there.

Or if it tears the J hook threaded end bracket out of the side of the box.
Had one that was like that when I got it, and I had to fix it.

I won't argue that. It just sounded like the OP's skills were lacking, and I thought it might help to have the seat out of the way. Once again I'll say, "I wish he lived closer. I'd go over and help him do it"

Really! I need to pull mine for a blower motor someday. Didn't know it was that easy. I haven't read the manual yet. (obviously) lol

Easiest temporary fix is to loop the heater hose in the engine compartment and wear a warm coat.

Almost takes longer to read the manual and drain some of the coolant than to pull it.

I got by one winter by running the coolant low and leaving the radiator cap loose. My leak wasn't terrible though.

You probably don't have a way, but I like to leak test them before I put them in.
I've had them leak right out of the Mexican box.
Also the inlet/outlet may need tweaking in to go in your firewall holes.
Then again, everything may be hunky dory.

That's pretty much exactly how it goes too.
I submerged mine in a sink and put as much pressure as I could into it to check for leaks because I had to melt the solder around one of the tubes so I could rotate it to where it needed to be.
OH the fun with these cars, and some of the parts available.

Damn all the arguing, ladies you're all pretty and you're all going to the prom! I kid. YES I am a newbie to these old cars, YES my skills are severely lacking, YES I need the car only to get back and forth to a movie set and drive it on set I do background in movies (Martin Scorsese The Irishman) fyi....and then back home and NO I'm not gonna do the work myself right away especially with no garage and in 8 degree weather we're having right now in NYC HOLY JESUS!! I just bought the car and I plan on having everything done by my very expensive but extremely knowledgeable mechanic Andre FOR NOW...while I do TONS on research on the car and then until I have time to get a space where I can begin tinkering and doing stuff myself. But I appreciate everyone's vigor and passion and input helping me out. I just ordered a new heater core and will bring it to my mechanic after the new year. Cheers everyone!

The last time I replaced an A body core, I just left the box in, no messing with the J hook. I just pulled the clips to split the halves.
And not to start an argument (again), but I had a bad experience with the Bars Leak. The Silver Seal may have some merit. So may coarse ground pepper.

Yesm its cold outside, but when I turned on my heater for the first time, it began blowing white haze smoke ...freaked me out so I turned it off. What gives?

I'm not a fan of any sealer even aluma-seal and don't even think EVER about barsleak. GAHHHHH I've had to clean wayyyyy too many engines and cooling systems that had it in it to ever recommend that junk. if you absolutely have to drive that car you'll be better off living without heat until you can replace the heater core. just find a piece of heater hose and loop it to both openings on the block fill with antifreeze and put on 4 more layers of clothes 2 pairs of gloves and carry plenty of windshield fluid until you get it fixed fro the frost on the windshield. (if the hoses are a different size then get one of those prestone flush kits and use the T filler as a bridge between the 2 different size hoses since it has a ridged edge that can adapt to both sizes ) I've used that trick on my diesel to get me home from the frozen UP in Michigan all the way to Florida . BTW I was frozen till I hit the Atlanta Georgia bypass and looked funny as heck when I had to fill up fuels looking like the michelin man or the pillsbury doughboy.
