I was going to clear coat my bee stripe in is that a fail?
Most likely no, aren't all restored cars brought back to base/clear mirror finish zero flaws original?
Me and a car bud were talking I said "well if ya replace the tires, brakes, water pump belts hoses a starter is it original?"
Nobody knows.
I can tell you that the blue A12 from the pics above has all it's original parts and pieces, all of them, every last thing.
HOW KNOWLEDGEABLE ARE THE JUDGES? Would they know about this and this and this?
They're not, and they think they do.
As everyone probably already knows, the owner of this 70 Cuda started the Survivor tent at Carlisle because he was told his original 3,400 mile car had multiple errors.
Me likes to think the battery cable was one of the fails.

Sometimes you have to ask yourself, HOW KNOWLEDGEABLE ARE THE JUDGES? Would they know about this and this and this?

That was a problem I had with a national Motorcycle club; their judges didn't know what they were looking at, so gave a first place trophy to a very non-correct old motorcycle, and also published it in their archives and website as a bike to use for reference for other people restoring their bikes. I contacted them and let them know that the judges need to be more knowledgeable about these things before they can call themselves judges because they're polluting the hobby with incorrect information that others are taking as truth on their own restorations....
That happens in drag racing, too. Sometimes the cars are older than the tech guys.

My book keeper had me judge a car show
I know enough to get into trouble
To do it right its way to time consuming
And I don't want to criticize someone else's ride
 
I'm getting the same feeling that I got right before I would wake up the next morning and wonder what the hell happened, so I'm just going to walk away from this one :eek:

Same thing happened here. I had some cars at a Concourse De E'legance (Maserati, Ferrari, Maserati) and one of the judges said they were a judge short and asked me to judge the Ferrari section with the panel of judges. I said I really didn't feel comfortable judging things. He said it's no big deal, you just wear a white coat and carry a clip board and he'll give me a quick course on what to pay attention to... I politely declined.

Most where better then anything I own
But like I would know if a 34 Packard had the right grill or trim
I like looking at all cars don't want to tell the guy his sucks cause there are sanding marks or orange peel in his paint
 
Went to a fairly good-sized show a year or so ago. Before it begins, there's an announcement asking if anybody will come be a judge. No experience required. Just need a warm body to judge....can't make this stuff up!

But it has to be the correct length of paint on the cable or it's incorrect, I mean it's not like it was different everytime, and never the entire cable, including the pigtail and terminal, right?

I've seen a number of original unrestored cars lately, for some reason, and it's refreshing to see evidence that it was just a job.

My 68K mile Hemi Satellite. Still has some orange paint on the negative cable end. Also smears of orange paint on valve cover when paint was still wet.

Then orange paint on tip of original fuel pump arm from when factory worker installed it on wet painted motor.

Meh.. I just walk through and judge them on my own any way most of my critique is within earshot of the owner they hear me ...and, I don't even charge them a fee for my expert opinion...:lol:
 

We were at a show in 1989 put on by Musclecar Review Magazine in Sacramento. They were judging, but our GTS had enough non-original stuff that it would not fare well in true concours judging, but the guy kept badgering me so I gave in. When the judges came by they missed the wrong number carb, full sport wheel covers on a poverty cap car, no stripe where one was originally, and a couple other things. At the same show was a clone '68 GTS convertible (owner was a friend of mine, but we weren't parked near each other). The judges came by and one of them muttered just loud enough for me to hear him that our car had the wrong wheel well moldings. Ours is an early car with the stainless trim with the lip. I told him that our car had the correct moldings. The clone had the later moldings so they went by that car as correct...
 
In the early 80's, I worked in a shop that restored, repaired, etc., Mustangs. We had customers that would come in on the Monday following a show, and request whatever crazy thing that they lost points for. It was an addiction. They paid by the hour, so whatever they wanted! It's no wonder show cars end up in enclosed trailers. Some of them, that we knew well, we'd offer to look for psychological help. lol
Points are deducted if all the tires are not in the same position, with its writing. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it.
 
I was a long time WOW/ISCA show person. The shop is was working for part time always had cars and a booth . He did and still does all makes and types.
Guys would want anything from stock orange peal, drips ect to all out Crazy custom stuff. If the money's green

My uncle had a 1970 Barracuda one year old. Owner Owner just driving it awhile and no longer wanted it. . Car was untouched.wanted a car note. Slant, 3 speed on floor, AM radio, heater.
Yellow. One door little crooked, quite a few runs, orange peel. Quality control was not there on many cars.
3rd Owner loaned to boyfriend, it and he totaled it.

Funny what you say about the orange peal. When I painted my Dart back in 89', I wanted the factory runs in the trunk and under the hood to remain. Often, at a show, someone would mention them, and I had to explain why they were there. They would say, they would have removed them. I also painted the car in enamel and not a base and clear as today. I call these cars, "over restored".
