Hemi Yes or No

I agree that was one of my concerns with bying a crate motor. What kind of $'s to get simalar engine setup you have seems to work for well for you.

i have around 14-15 im mine. that was doing my own machine work and building it myself. prices have came down on some of the stuff since i did mine, but if you have somebody build you one i'd say your still gonna be around 20 or so.

I see some Ray Barton bashing. i have a buddy that has a barton hemi in a street strip car. its been a real good motor for him.

i'd recommend either Barton or Modern Cylinder head for at least the heads. Bartons valve gear is also real nice...

Not too worried about breakage won't be driving it to hard only once in while I have Dana 60 with ladder bars going to add coilovers I will however put scatter shield in the car and good driveshaft. How do you like your caltracs kind of still debating the coilover setup with the ladder bars on the street.

the caltracs work good, but if your already have most of the stuff for ladder bars i'd continue that route for sure.

Enough said

Around '98 before crate motors were available I bought a new Ray Barton assembled 472 cu in short block and had them put new valve guides (they said the new factory installed guides were too loose) in my brand new Mopar Perf aluminium Hemi heads, then assemble the long block for a basically stock spec street Hemi ...six months later when I took the valve springs off to change to a tad better valve springs...I noticed the #1 cylinder had no valve seal on the intake (no wonder the #1 plug was always black while the rest were light brown) and an old umbrella style on the exhaust...all the rest..correct teflon seals...upon further inspection (I thought I'd better have a little look-see) I found the #1 rod jounal had been nicked when piston/rod was installed...a rookie or hurried mistake.. and the bearing had a groove in it like a main bearing...everything else looked fine. I couldn't even get Mr.Ray to buy the parts(1 rod bearing,2 teflon valve seals)...yet alone(I didn't even ask) any allowance for the labor(mine) and the crank polishing repairing their goof...so much for Mr.Hemi. I know Barton is the king of race Hemis...but the courtesy I received showed me how he valued us "little guys"..........is that... enough said??

Last year I put together 2 426 Hemis...one for Jims butterscotch Hemi Demon (street car/hot rod)and one for myself. I catch heat all the time(mostly from my brother) because they are basically stock spec motors....running 9.7 compression.70-71 hyd Mopar cam,...nothing real trick...except their all aluminium..block and heads, stage V roller rockers, diamond pistons, eagle H beam rods and crank....nothin exotic...just lighter /stronger than stock.I love a Hemi for the street....hard to beat the WOW factor, especially in an A-Body...but I like to keep the compression low enough (pump gas friendly) that you can crank some timing in it(Hemi..around 32-34 degrees)..every big block Mopar from 30 years ago(back when we coulld get Sunoco 260/around 106 octane/maybe 69 cents a gallon) till now ran like a pig unless I'd crank some timing in it...but today eveyone still wants big compression and then if they try to run on any sniff of todays gas..they rattle (spark knock) like crazy..then they retard the timing and wonder why it runs like an old station wagon. For street driving, its hard to beat the reliabity/driveability of a stock spec 426 (even with lower compression ratio)....and I love the way they rev without the "big arm" stroker crank.....wwummmpaahhhh!!!........just saying...after all..you asked!

oh yea...in mine...Passon aluminium case 4-speed/gear vendor OD...and 4:30 gear...with a appx 30" tall rear tire....hopefully fun on the street...maybe 2400-2500rpm@65/70 mph....gas milage...who cares???

Thanks for the info guy's everything helps, I do have the ability to build motor I am a motorcycle dealer and we are used to building big hp high rpm motors I have a turbo gsxr1000 that is about 265hp on our dyno jet dyno. We run 8.20s with it not with me on it. Too old for that now. Looks like what I want is doable just might be a little more work than I want to do. I think I will just start gathering parts for the Hemi because I don't think I will be happy if I don't do it at least once in my lifetime, but I will build my simple wedge to throw in it and play for now and put Hemi in it when I have some more time besides I will probably need a spare setup once I put the Hemi in it and break it. I hate not being able to drive my cars.

Any suggestions on Heads, cams, stroker or not, carb intake.

Street car mid 10's pump gas.
Any other setups out there I have seen 68 Hemi GTS's anybody runnig single carb not sure it I want cross ram.

Thanks Hemidenny those setups sound awsome where are located.

My brothers and I had a motorcycle (Honda.Yamaha,Kawasaki) dealership in the '80's....It was a blast....bikes were cheap....loans for bikes were readily available if you breathed(Congress must have took notice for their home-loan program)...everybody had a good paying job...we were young and indestructable...oh well....anyways I live in Findlay,Ohio...just south of Toledo about 35 miles...did you check out the 71 Hemi Demon build on this thread by Hemi Mark...he's a buddy... I put a 528 crate motor in his Duster over 12 years ago....realitively mild..but I can feel that longer stroke in the pedal...just can't rev as fast...like my 472...thats the biggest reason I went BACK to a 426...it revs sooooo much sweeter....hard to get a big cuber guy to admit it though...all about size/big cam/ect....also Hemi Mark has the 850Cfm single carb...works good...but I'm partial to the 2/4bbl ...not just for factory look ,but you basically run on the rear 600cfm carb(nice and crispy) until you stick your foot in it and progressivly(hate to use that word) open all 8 barrels...no big deal to tune...since you are primarily on the rear carb..... it's like tuning your 383 Roadrunner.....

Yea I like the sound of a motor that revs, they sound so much crisper. I just want to have a little respect from the BBC guys when I pull into the parking lot. It will take a pretty strong motor to do that around here.

Where was your dealership we have been around along time ourselves. 30 year aniversary this year. We have Yamaha Kawasaki Suzuki Polaris Victory. I had a Honda dealership in Kississimmee in the late 90's but sold that one. I'm probably the only guy around here that want's $5 gas. LOL
Then I could afford all the hot toy's for my car.

In Findlay,Ohio....Laubes Cycle City...later...Laubes Cycle World sold a ton of Goldwings and 3-wheelers....in '81 I was the Kawasaki salesman of the year...bigwhoop!

Been there done that.

The 80's were tough by the mid 90's things got stupid good and now that things have tanked it's back to the early 80's only cheaper intrest rates but they won't buy anybody.

We sell alot of sport bikes, and atv's have 3 stores one of which we just bought last year I don't know if that was smart or stupid I guess only time will tell.
Here's our our store. www.skypowersportsportrichey.com
Thanks for all your help i'm sure I will be asking lot of questions of you guys over the next year as this project grows, and I know it will all my projects seem to take on a mind of there own.

A little off topic how far can you bore a 440 i am putting together a quick wedge motor to run while i'm sorting out all this Hemi Stuff.

Nice website for your store!...I personally wouldn't go any bigger than I had to to clean it up and make sure it's round....if you really are after bigger cubes...stroke it...but we covered that already....sticks in my mind .060 over was about the max for the above.....can always sonic test it....by the way...nice 'Cuda

If respect is want from the local boys...show up w/ a Hemi....any Hemi...just bring plenty of towels to wipe up the drool.

Yea I agree thats why I want Hemi but it will have to back up it's reputation so I will make sure it's pretty stout.

I was just curious about 440 I won't spend to much on it just some pistons and cam and see what can find in the way of decent heads nothing too crazy.

Stroked 340 I have had plenty of small blocks when I was young and you are right in your insinuation that a small blocks can run but I'm not looking to race anybody on the streets like the old days just make the young guys drool. Every time sombody found out I was running a small block they just had to have a piece of me too bad for them. LOL

I just couldn't keep them together back then #3 mains kept spinning and that was with different blocks, heads and eveything else, also spent alot of money with Ed Hambuger prepping the blocks. So Hemi it is. Plus one of my best friends has a Buick GSX Stage 2 car that is just awsome so I can't let him get the best of me. Ha Ha

Hemi's rule for street cred. Just have to build it to back it up.

:usa2:you can also put a 383 bb they are awesome motors as kinda like a stroker with out the price tag.....

Ok my opion is this Do what you want I used to always build and panit the way I wanted and got a a lot of comments good and bad! I am currently building 3 projects. But my mopar project is a 66 Dart GT Convertible. I'm putting a 5.7 HEMI out of a durango with 5 spd auto, also I am running a 4:56 rear all my friends say that's to low but I run 4:88's in my 57 Bel Air behind a 454....whoooya she rolls, oh and when my friends go for a ride they sure like how I built it then . So get advice but do whatever makes "YOU" happy.....here's my dart who needs a HEMI under glass when you can have a Dart under snow, illinois winters!!!!!:glasses7:

I think I have answered my ? Hemi Yes or No I'm back to my original plans.

1969 Barracuda Hemi 426 Dana 60 4.56 gear and a 4/speed pump gas street car.
this should be fun

I knew you'd see the light!!!!...regarding the drool...I speak from experience....just ask HemiMark....Oh and costs?????...Hemis definately aren't for the "budget builder"(I always agree with most.. 383's,440's,small blocks are easier on the wallet for $$$ per HP)....but how does it go?..."if you can't run with the big dogs...stay on the porch!...or maybe thats "spend" not "run".........Mopar to ya'

By the way ...while your spending...Passon Performance has a new aluminium case 5 speed just out...will work w/any of these babies!!!....I think it's only around $4395....and you were worried about costs...

Thanks I think I'll just keep this info between us if the wife finds out I might end up 6 feet under. Lol

Good thing if I keep the car looking the same i'm probably ok.
