forgotton cars

I see an old Daytona Shelby and a LeBaron GTC everyday
here in my neighborhood.:D

I couldn't tell you what 99% of the cars are on the road today. Maybe
I'm too old school or maybe all of the vehicles look the same today.

I just gave a 91 LeBaron GTC coupe away to a girl who needed a car. 2.5 turbo, 5 speed car.

Mavericks,1970's-80's full size vans,full size station wagons,late 70's Thunerbirds-Cougars,A frame tow trucks most all rollbacks now,AMC Eagle,Sun Birds,Citations,Chevy Luv,F body Mopars,Tempo,Probe,Fierro,Late 70's Lincolns,Early to Mid 80's Cougars-Thunderbirds,Shadow,Omni,Lazer,Daytona,and so many more...

Guys,I haven't seen a CSX,or a Daytona Shelby in twenty years!Never seen a 2.2 turbo GTC before,they alaways had the doggy 3.0.Thanks.

Unfortunately the high price of scrap metal has turned so many of these future classics into shreds...

My Dad used to have an '87 Caravelle Sedan, it was gray, and my Mom had an '87 Horizon, it was white with a blue interior. The Caravelle was getting old and had a door smashed it (ask me about that one, and it will confirm the stereotype of female asain drivers). And so it was given away to an HVAC guy who worked on our house for his niece to have "beater" car. The Horizon had the transaxle go bad and it was totalled out in 2002.

I've always been partial to 1972 and earlier A bodies, and 1970 and earlier B bodies, but I suppose newer cars (mid-late 70's and early 80's cars) could be made "cooler" with those big front bumpers and abundant pollution controls. lol

last summer a guy brought in a citation 4 dr. wanted us to rebuild the engine. it was rusted out and looked like someone died in it. old man bought it new and wanted to keep it. we told him the cost of the rebuild was the same for a good used car. he didnt care, he wanted to keep the citation. so i built it and it cruises bedford everyday. also passed a plymouth cricket the other day. most people never heard of them

just for the record, convertible dakotas were not shelbys and shelby dakotas were not convertibles.... same year, but not the same truck.....

my every other day daily driver...I bought it new in march of 89...#321

The inherent problem with 1972 & later cars was the ever-changing pollution control devices ; year-to-year and 49 state vs. California variations spelled doom for the 'Gas Crunch Refugees' .

Electronically-controlled carburetters ??? May as well build a diesel-powered mousetrap !!

My parents bought a 1976 Mercury Monarch in March 1976 (at 6 years of age , I vividly recall the transaction :D ) . 351 W / C5 / unknown gear . Silver with cranberry 'leather' interior and a silver opera vinyl top .
That stupid "Variable Venturi" Autolite 2Bbl was a piece-of-**** which constantly vapour locked ; the C5 trans was weak ; and the worst part : Steering Coupler broke within 5 years (what do you mean it's out of warranty ??) , and Ford didn't produce service replacements !!!

When I first started scrounging self-serve junk yards in c.1986 , I'd see front wheel drive **** boxes from the early 80's already lining the yard !! It's almost like the poor bastard whom bought that new Citation sent in the last payment and then immediately called the junk yard !!

So , for years , no one ever thought that their '72 & newer cars would be worth the dust that the car was gathering because it wouldn't pass Cali's intrusive bi-annual smog check probe , and the parts were discontinued or too expensive to buy:mumum:.

Go Green ! I can't wait to see Volts , Prius , Leaf and other **** box "hybrids" in the yards when their owners find out how much those damned batteries are to replace :thebirdm:

I still drive this everyday and even though it's a Chevy, it is like a rock and keeps on going. I use it in my daily work. Nice thing about it is that if it breaks down, 9 times out of 10 i can buy the parts off the shelf and go back and fix it right there on the side of the road, plus the price was right.... Free!!!!

One of my projects next summer is to strip my dad's old 89 LeBaron GTC with the intercooled turbo 2.2 and 5 speed. 73k original miles everything goes out and/or breaks.

My brother has a Conquest turbo for sale. He also has an 81 Charger 2.2 convertible with like 13k original miles.

Thanks for clarifying that. I don't know how many times I hear people refer to 'Shelby Dakota convertibles'. Sure is a popular misconception.
Here's a pic of one of the two Shelbys I bought new. This was my first new truck. I just sold it a few months ago as I am wanting to buy my first new car, a Challenger.
The truck was all original except the battery, tires, brake calipers, and a/c clutch. (And I still had the original parts.) I bought it new in Jan. 1990 and sold it to a member here.

What about the Eagle Premier ? They built a state of the art plant close to me in Brampton Ontario to produce that and I think I have only seen maybe 3 in my life.

Someone mentioned the Aztec earlier. I see one from time to time. This morning, however, I saw TWO. They were both silver, and one right behind the other. Plus they were both the "revised" styling with less bare plastic, more paint. Didn't help much, though - still absurd looking.

I see a lot of those cars all the time! Pick n' pull is just a few blocks away.

At one time there were no less than THREE of those Shelby Daks in Warrensburg, MO. During that same period there were a half-dozen Lil' Reds and a half-dozen wing cars within a 20 mile radius, that I knew of.

Someone mentioned the Citation, do you remember the Citation X-11? It was a "sporty" two-door version with the 2.8 V6.
Or how about the Mercury version of the Ford Fairmont - The Mercury Zephyr?
Also, remember Oldsmobile came out with a "442" in the form of the FWD Calais with the
"Quad4" motor around 1991? what a joke that was.

A guy up the road from me (about half a mile) owns a ragtop shelby dakota too.

As far as I know, he bought it new. And it's still wearing the original paint & stripes (although the paint is showing its age)

i am 98% positive they were built. i cant find much info on them , but from what ive read they came in red, black and white only. the dakota sport also came in 4x2 and 4x4 verts as well in 89. shelby dakotas were 318 powered 2 years before they went into standard production.

There is a Plymouth Reliant wagon, 4 speed manual that runs around town. There are a few of those late 70's Thunderbirds around too, the ones with the 10 foot hood. My girlfriend's dad used to have a Pinto 2 door wagon. He sold it to a girl in town, who just sold it to the people doing the new Superman movie. Every once in a while we see an AMC Eagle, the 4wd wagon.

...saw a Pinto on the freeway just yesterday!
There's alot of interesting cars out here, last week i saw a 53/54 vette being towed, without a dolly no less!
I followed this Avanti out of the Lowe's parking lot, not sure if its an original model or the later remake from the 80's.
