I have the correct 1970 crossmember and the right mount... it fits in the crossmember perfect. the problem im having is its a 1 inch to short to bolting up. like the tranny needs to go back one inch.....the bolt threw the mount to the tranny will bolt up but then the crossmember wont bolt to the frame...

basically its like the engine and tranny have to go back 1 inch... maybe i have the wrong motor mounts? i have the biscuit types off a 360 that was in A ramcharger.. motor bolted in fine...

its a 340 bolted to a 904...

I ask because I had the same issue on a dart with a 360 and those mounts. I had modified the 6 K frame for the V8

trying to understand the motor mounts on the wrong side of block tabs? what do you mean?

motor is bolted in although drivers mount does look like its pulling back..

It means do you have the motor mounts on the correct side?

my trans mount is a biscuit type there is no long bolt... just 2 bolts and then on that goes threw bottom of crossmember....

i assume my motor mounts are on the right side is there a way to tell? the both looked the same to me and only boilted up one way to the brackets.

1. Unbolt everything.
2. Hang motor/tranny by your cherry picker.
3. Bolt the transmission in place, do not fully tighten.
4. Lower the motor down and fiddle with the motor mounts until the motor is sitting correctly; it should be 2.5" closer to passenger side.

It's best to work back to front.

In many cases the motor mount bracket can be bolted to the rear of the block mount bosses or the front of them. The difference is about the inch you need.

The engine bracket belongs on the REAR side of the engine casting tabs

Maybe this sketch will help, as you can see, if you have the bracket mounted to the rear of the engine tabs your engine and tranny will be forward about an inch. Your brackets should be mounted the front of the tabs as shown in the sketch.

hmmm. both of my small blocks mount with the brackets to back of the engine bosses. i just went out and looked.

Good diagram, but isn't it showing them to the rear?

Grant

It does if you look closely. The centerline for the bolts that go through the mounts and then the 90° bends and into the back of the ears on the block.

I had to look twice to verify it myslef.

Are you sure that you have the right mount brackets that bolt to the engine ears? I'm not sure what you are referring to with the "biscuit mounts". You need the early style 67 - 72 engine mount brackets and rubber mounts bolted to the rear of the mounting ears on the block. The LEFT mount is different for the 340/360 than the 273/318. The right side is standard for all small block engines.
