Hi guys,

I'd like to know if it's ok to drive my car up on ramps, unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate, and run the engine without the torque converter attachéd to rule it out as a source of vibration. I believe I can get to the bolts without unbolting the tranny, the the torque converter will slide back enough to clear.

You didn't say but I assume your working on some sort of older Mopar. If that's the case it won't work. The torque converter has the ring gear for the starter attached to it. If you unbolt the torque converter it won't start.

When does it vibrate? Just sitting there revving the engine or only when your driving?

If your engine is vibrating sitting at idle, the first thing I would check is the harmonic balancer(dampner).Check to see if its seperating(you will see rubber hanging out.Assuming this is a 360LA?

Duh, well I had a brain fart, of course it wouldn't start if I unbolt the torque converter. Don't know what I was thinking. It is a 360, and I have already replaced the harmonic balancer. The converter is externally balanced, just not sure what else could be wrong. Are there different externally balanced converters for a 904? How can I verify I have the right one?

Again I am sorry about asking about unbolting the torque converter, I must be losing it.....my mind that is.

No biggie. We all have brain farts every once in a while. Yes there are 2 different external weight balance amounts for 360's. 360 LA's are different to 360 Magnum's. But 904's were never used behind a 360 magnum so if it is a 904 converter weighted for a 360 magnum it would have to be custom built.

Many converters will have "minor" weights for neutral balancing, what do the weight(s) look like, and do you have any idea where the converter came from?

Has the vibration always been there, or did it "appear?"

Have you tried running the engine a short time with all belts removed?
