how do i get out of it without being rude

Accept the car. You're lucky to have such wonderful parents, although the fact that you're adopted says much about their character already. It really sounds like they're concerned with your safety and security, not judging your love of old cars.

In my experience, driving my new car makes me appreciate my old cars. And driving my old cars sometimes makes me (gasp) appreciate what new cars have to offer. The way I see it, it's like using the right tool for the job. Much as I love my old Mopars, there are times when I need a quiet, reliable, gas-sipping set of wheels. A new Dart might also fit the bill. ;) It wouldn't be my first choice, but there's obvious love in the fact that they picked a new Dart. It makes me want to give 'em a big hug!

Either way, congrats! Post some picks if you accept their offer!

There is something extremely appealing (at least to me) about a woman in an old car. Just sayin'

the best advice i took from this thread was to have a heart to heart talk with them.

i did today because finally everyone was home and there was time to talk.

we decided together to hold off for now .......they said its no rush and should i decide i need a new car we can always get one later.

when i told my dad my reasons ...he laughed as he said he agrees with me.

he has a 69 cuda FB that he bought in 1972 and it was our family car, even when i moved here it was still in service as a family car ....we went everywhere in that cuda ...i learned how to drive in that cuda and actually took my drivers test in it. well in 2006, the cuda was replaced as a family car in favor of a new mercedes benz (i know, i know)

well after the cuda was retired ......it deteriorated really bad from just sitting next to the barn......mice got in it, the rubber all dry rotted, tires all went flat, exhaust rotted out......now its in the barn in pieces and is looking like its left for dead.

well that is my fear for my dart and why i had an issue with this whole thing.....not that i didnt want it....but dont need it.

my dad agrees that he should have kept the cuda going because now it needs a full resto to bring it back to how it was even in 06 which was still showing age then but still very alive.

they expressed to me, that they were thinking i wanted a new car to be like some friends i have nearby from the richie rich neigborhood who all have new cars and such. i am a lot different from those girls because they all have I-phones and glamour clothes. Parents were thinking i was bothered about that when i am really not ....i dont even keep a cell phone and i make my own clothes ......i dont need all the glitz.

They were not even worried about my dart or the reliability of it, they know i can handle an old car.

we had fun today hanging out with eachother and my dad actually drove a new challenger SRT ......WOW those things have some power......and we all decided to hold off for now and if anything i got him excited and thinking about his cuda again ......that cuda is an old friend.......i smell winter project coming on.

i hope i dont look bad to anyone here for influencing the hold off ....but i feel better now.

Bottom line Rani here is, you had the talk and the outcome is what pleased you ALL!!!! I've been curious on this thread!

Glad to hear you had the talk. Great to know that there is still smart younger people in this world. Sounds like you have a great home and family. I'm impressed once again by your personally.

Glad you had a good talk with them Rani and they understand where your coming from. Maybe someday you'll be able to help your dad restore the 'cuda and relive some of those old memories.

Um, yes.

My lady had the option of buying a new car.

No.

Decided to dump the cash into an old Plymouth and is dying for a pistol grip.

Gives me a grin, just thinking about it.

I"m confused 'theres to many people in this world that could give a darn less about there kids and it sounds like you get rewarded like my sisters only daughter it doesn't sound like your being bought , it sounds like a huge LUV reward for being a descent respectfull person , take the car and give more luv back they obviously care about you very much , more than words could say. good luck with your delema I would not hurt there feeelings and decline but that's just me I never had that delema

That's the news I was waiting to hear Rani!! A very mature lady speaking to her very loving parents and a bonus that you can use your love of cars to now motivate your dad about his cuda!! I think this situation turned out great!! Geof

Good for you Rani, God I wish there were more young folks like you around!!!

I guess we didn't have digital cameras back in the mid- 2000s

I found some still pics ...so this is a pic of a pic .....I asked permission first to post these because this is not my car.

about a year after it was parked. the pass rear tire and driver front tire went flat.

this car had been re-painted in the late 80s ....its supposed to have the lower tape stripes and Cuda 340 cutouts on the fenders in red ....instead the shop put a pin stripe which later mostly peeled off....the little scoops are on one of my darts now but definitely need to go back.

we should have just given it a make-over instead of retiring and replacing....even though this is a very high miles car....but even up to the time these pics were taken it was in really decent shape other than needing a new set of tires and rear spring freshen up

Looks like a great car to hone your already impressive skills on! When you start looking for springs, check this place out. http://www.springsnthings.com/ They have stock height, or 1", 2" over stock height to raise it up a little without having to resort to air shocks or Superstock springs that will make it ride like a wagon. The lady that answers the phone at springsnthings is very sharp. I'm glad this worked out best for all of you.

Cool car that should make for a good project. Thanks for sharing.

Good thread,Rani. Lots of good info offered, You made the decision, your soul and loved ones could live with,KUDOS! The bad part,of my post: You got me,thinking about Cuda's again......(lol!).

Rani if you dont mind me asking are you going to have pay for insurance, registration? those are going to be double or triple, each...

Don't forget taxes...that's one reason I sold my Magnum. (I was getting hit for $1000+/year!)

This is a good point, rani. While YOU might not care about your old cars, believe it or not, some people might. Such as perspective employers. If you pull in somewhere for an interview in (in their eyes) some old POS, it could have an effect. Like it or not, people judge on the things they can see first. By contrast, if you whoop up in a bright shiny new car, they might see responsibility. It can work to your advantage in certain instances. You shouldn't be so dead set against it. Let your parents do it for you. They will not be here forever and it will give the a sense they are needed.

I have NEVER had any employer care what I drove to an interview in...in fact, most of them didn't know.

I drove a 73 during my current job interview process. I don't think anyone saw the car.
If they had, it just might have impressed them.
I fix things for a living.

I went to one interview in a primer-gray Jeep J-20 with holes in the bed, a green tailgate, rusty white-spoke wheels, and an old Western plow hoist painted construction-cone orange. (No, I did NOT paint it!)

well remember how you wanted to fix up a cuda. well its not a 68 like you wanted, but from what your saying its pretty complete, and its a 69 340 formula S car to boot. mebbe your dad will work on it with you, and eventually gift it to you since you appreciate these cars. i cant think of anything better than that. sounds like ya got yourself a win win.
