who has the fastest 318 ?!!!

-
I guess the gratification of doing it with a 318 is just that: It's a 318. I am still amazed at how most mopar people view the 318. An 11 second 360/340 on the street is easily accepted. But a lot of people will doubt a 12 second 318 on the street, unless ya spend 4K. I know (as everyone else knows) that the 360/340 is the going to offer more, however, it amazes me that the Ford fans will build the 5.0 stang's, and many mopar fans have respect for them, but the larger 318 is not given a chance. So, this will be your satisfaction: you did it with a 318

exactly! just when everybody says dual quad tunnel ram would make it run like crap and took it out to the track the next day and ran more than a half second faster! Don't tell a mopar guy what he can't do it! he might just go out and do it ! I'm going to make my 318 run like crazy and beat some Mopars, Ford, and Chevy! with bigger motors!

I never got it to run down the track, but when I got my 73 dart it had what I thought was the original 318 and 904 trans, but it had way too much power, but it was burning lots of oil as well so it had to come out. But I could get it to spin the tires into second gear with 2.76 rear gears easy! It also didn't quite sound smooth enough to be a stock cam. Upon pulling that motor out and putting my new one in I took a look into that motor and the cars drivetrain. The trans was actually a 999 with a low first gear set, and the motor was a roller 318, Im pretty sure it had a few things done to it, I haven't looked much into it though. I beat the hell out that motor, and it still ran! still have it, I think im gunna take it apart and see exactly what It has in it.

I'd love to hear what you find?!

It is amazing that Ford fans will build the snot out of a 302 & MoPar guys disrespect a 318 like its a Chevy motor. The 318 should have no problem spanking the 302.

I really agree with this statement.....The teen's stroke, solid crank, and far better rods, do make it a no brainer. Both need help with the heads, but there are available castings that will equal out the difference, as long as you're comparing straight style wedge heads.

While there are some really strong running Ford 347's, the're virtual time bombs in my opinion. The rod/stroke ratio, and piston pin height is horrible.....Not to mention splitting the lifter valley in half with some real power, that usually needs boost or spray to get there.

That said, our 340/360 is so solid, and the ease of a 4" stroke kit, does tend to make the 273/318 engines somewhat obsolete when talking about the cost/time to get the same power.

P.S..... Oops :), RRR is not gonna like my post. Sorry Rob.....I do still love your mild/lightweight build. It is a solid platform for what you are looking to accomplish, and I'd love to do one like that myself. :thumbrig:

Well, obsolete, maybe, since the core block can take the 4+ inch arm no problem. 390 cubes is nothing to cast aside as crap.

In standard form, it still can be a fun Power plant and produce good power. Everyone is basically applied by the larger cube offerings. LOL, remember back only ten years ago? Go back 20 when the 360 was considered nothing more than a pile of poop because it was born a smog motor.

If Harry and Tom Sheehan don't have the fastest 318, I'd say they at least know who does. I've seen tom run a 10.15 in his super stock Sebring. They also have done motor work for mike volkman, and he is flying with a 318. EPOXY,EPOXY,EPOXY!!!

I know of a quicker street driven one ;)

"Should"...... but it doesn't. I'd have to dig into numbers to form a strong argument but I think the 302 is a larger bore space, bore, and cylinder head layout. I can think of a single turbo SBF that makes around 2000 in a SS 10.5 tire mustang. The sbf is crazy!!

Ain't that the truth.

Ken Etter is a man that's run the GT classes in Super stock with a 318. Word is he's made at least 540hp in that trim. What's not to like there. :thumbrig:

If I was seriously looking to do a max effort teen, I'd check out as many big powered 340 builds as I could find, and just mirror one of those. Same stroke with just a little less (questionable) breathing capacity with the slightly smaller bore and a few less cubes. I doubt a teen in the same configuration would be more then 5% or at most 10% less power.

Talking about taking one close to the limit? Mike @ MRL has specked out a 340 that will make 650-700hp. I don't know that he's built one yet, and he was looking to use a "R" block, but I'm sure that's easily obtainable without going absolutely to the edge. A little less bore built that way, should be easily kissing 600hp.

2x cubes is fairly easily done these days on most race engines.....Just have to have the wallet for it, which I'm nowhere even close. :D

P.S..............:D:D Damn Tony, lol :D:D

I got money says there are more badass 302s than 318s just for that very reason. Them rustang guys know how to make a little motor run.

Yep, again I agree with RRR. When somebody wants advice on a 318, even here, instantly there told to buy a 360. I understand that 360's are really easy to get, and just as cheap as 318's. This is why we see more 302's running than 318's. I wonder how common it would be to see a fast 318 if the 360 was much harder to get and much more expensive? I bet we'd see the 'teens cooking down the track

might be that Furd installed 302s in mustangs for the last umpteen years....and the last 318 that was in a mopar car?...a dodge Dakota a dodge ram...real performance based vehicles...LOL

View attachment 20140630_175154-1.jpgI'm going to stick to my 318. I'm hoping to rebuild this winter. So far 14.2 . I need to take weight off to help that little teen! Please chime in on my (is it legal) thread as I need help, or should I say--my 318 needs help? Not a big budget by any means, but I have a few dollars to throw at it from time to time . Battery is in the back now. Heater/ air conditioner out. Wipers/ motor out. Inside two low buckets only. Those heavy doors! :banghead:

I put the fastest quarter mile on the original post I'm pretty sure. or quickest if you will if you want to split hair's?

Not splittin hairs at all. Quickest and fastest are two completely different things. One is measured in ET and the other in MPH.

I have done the Furd 302 thing and with off the shelf aluminum heads and a ported factory Cobra (FI) intake, AOD, 4.10 and ran a best of 11.75 @ 113 MPH. The 360 in my Dart is not exactly fresh, but it would be interesting to see if I could replicate those results with a 318. I would look for a later model Magnum version of the 318 from a truck for as a starting point. My EQ heads would need some mild porting and a close shave to get the chambers down around 54 cc. I would step up to a 1 3/4 inch header and run my existing roller cam as a starting point. I am not sure it would be as easy to get a Dart down to 2900 lbs as it is a Rustang (even with the heavy hatch model).

That's kickin some buttocks for a 302.

Looks nice! I will tell you, though, that your 318 is NOT swallowing those cfm's up top there. I know you went to the dual quads and dropped ET, but that could only be that it was too lean before, and now you are getting the fuel. But that's ok, work with it if you're having fun. :) Just so you know, there are a lot of 750 dp Holleys into the 10's. I've seen people run 10's with a Thermoquad. One throw togather 318 I had was in a dart sport that went 14.40's at 96 mph. It just had a set of used 360 heads, used 340 cam and a Thermoquad. My gears were 3.21's with a stock automatic and stock converter. But keep working with it and see what it does for you! I like the idea!

One of the guys I raced with back in Colorado had a very nice 60's Mustang with a heavily modified 302. He would wind that thing to the moon on every pass, 9000+ RPM (it sounded Wicked!!)...it ran 10.9's at high altitude...that would be high 9's for those of us at "normal" altitude. I'm not a Ford fan, and I really don't like Mustangs, but that car was Awesome.
