I'll take the better intake and 800 cfm quad over the 68 cam any day. Not sure why the 68 cars on your list are at the top most times I have found are 14.90's from back in the day 71 times are 14.50's is this a fantasy list?

Car Life: 1968 Barracuda 0-60 Quarter Mile
225 cid automatic 13.6 19.4 @ 69.8
273 V8 automatic 9.2 16.9 @ 85.6
340 V8 7.1 14.93 @ 96.6

Didn't't think the cuda came with a 273 in 68, thought they went to 318's, at least that is what mine is.

Great info. 69 Cuda! Interesting to see the numbers. Most of the cars with the same or similar engine sizes run about the same. Some guys don't know the 360 cars are just as fast if not faster than the 340 cars. They came with bigger carbs, more torque, and electronic ignition. They could run 14s even though the top rear gear was only 3.23.

The weight I posted is based on listed 'Shipping Weight', not Curb Weight.

Does it include the weight of the driver?

I ran a 10.95....and then my daughter got in the car and ran 10.77....and it was on difference days...so the weather was different too...Did that effect the ET?

so what did the car run?

Yes, it should be listed as the OP's theoretical list. He does have some logic behind it. Would have been nice to qualify the list that way from the beginning. OP likes to drop post bombs like this and see what happens.

Not sure there were any '68 340 Barracuda coupe 4spd magazine tests back in the day? They didn't build many that way.

So would you agree a 68 340 Barracuda coupe weighs less than a 71 Demon? How close do you think the weights are?

So do you think the stone stock 68 AVS carb chokes the advantages of the bigger 68 cam?

Do you think the 2" shorter wheelbase helps weight transfer significantly?

I think the 68 4 speed cam is not much bigger at all the 284 vs the 268 is not even close to a modern 284 vs 268, and the lift is about the same anyway. The 71 carb and intake to me is a bigger plus, this is the big reason the 71 a body Is the year to use in F.A.S.T. Racing. And even stock. The only thing missing was a 68 383 roadrunner beat down!

I bought my 69 340 Swinger new,, it was built in late 68,, and the front bench seat didn't have headrests..(69's had headrests), and had the nasty camshaft..

I was running either F or G stock,, 7 inch slicks,, I was running 13.29,, and was 2/10ths off the NHRA record of 13.09, and somewhere I have the hardware.. lol.. IIRC..

We're talking stone stock of the showroom floor.

Some of the cars supplied to the magazine writers for testing have had their distributors recurved...rejetted carbs...certainly not show room stock....

a car company...aka dodge or plymouth did not want a magazine article written showing that their treasured 340 A bodies were slow...

So you think the 68 AVS was a big choke?

Stock if really 100% would be a better comparison.

FAST is big cubic inch, stroke, and cam so I would think would respond to a bigger carb greatly. IMHO, that's a whole different animal.

Thanks TF 360,

The 1974 360 A-Body cars were Torque-Monsters.

I remember when they first came out. Many Mopar guys were disappointed because the
'340 Hercules' was discontinued.

But after a while, we realized the 360 could run.......... real good.

More of a combo intake and avs, most I have read say the 70 340 six pack was the hottest 340 then the 71. But since we are talking A body only I haven't seen any published times in general quicker than the 71 duster/demons.

Very nice article and you went through a lot of work putting it together. I enjoy reading your posts. Being # 30 isn't bad. Carrying the shock absorbing bumper gear had to slow that car down as well as hamper the weight transfer with that very heavy nose. Dan

If they did NOT have slicks, then the times will be all over the place due to track condition and driver ability. Most cars I've ran at the track were modified in some way, but here, for grins, is my list of bone stock cars that I raced:

1.) B-body with 318 2bbl auto 2.94's - 15.94 84 mph (dual exhaust from manifolds)
2.) 2005 Pontiac GP 3.8 V6 auto ------ 16.21 83 mph
3.) 1994 Buick Regal 3.8 V6 auto ----- 16.22 83 mph
4.) 1997 Buick LeSabre 3.8 V6 auto -- 16.45 85 mph
5.) 1989 Dodge Caravan 2.5 turbo ---- 16.60 (forgot)
6.) 1992 Dodge Dakota club cab 2wd V6 auto -- 17.21 79 mph
7.) 1991 Dodge Dynasty 3.3 V6 ------- 17.27 78 mph
8.) 1977 Chrysler New Yorker 440 auto - 17.31 82 mph

Most everything I took to the strip wasn't stock, but, for grins its just a list of my experience with stock cars I drove everyday....

Several people have asked for "Times", but you dont seem to be able to come up with them.

So do you have "TIMES" to back up your list ?

TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES TIMES !!!!!

Otherwise, this is just a waste of bandwidth.

Point to Remember

Some of these A-Body cars ran damn near exact Elapsed Times, and many of the
variances are as close as .01 {1/100th}.

General Opinion,

Was that the 1971 340 was the quickest A-Body, as a result of the 'new' Carburetor
Carter Thermoquad {750 CFM}, and wide throat Intake Manifold.

But, take into account the 68' Notchback Barracuda, which had the '1968' 4-Speed Camshaft',
and {-55 lbs.} less weight than the 1971 Duster 340.

That's a 'Tough Short Fish' for the Duster to take down..................

The 'Quickest' A-Body Small Block from the Factory.

1968 Barracuda 'Notchback' ~ 340 Formula-S ~ 4-Speed ~ 3.91 Gears ~ E70 x 14" Tires

Performance......... 13.89 @ 101.17 MPH

There are some quick 71 Demons and Dusters that run NHRA stock classes. 10:60's with no problem! They seem to be the fastest of the A bodies

I don't know of any notch back 68 or 69 'Cudas being campaigned. There are several fastbacks though, 340 and 383 powered, and a few 69 440's.

Pa karp

I love the 340, have 4 of them. But let's get real none ran quicker than low 14's at best stock even with 3.91 gears. Here is the list I trust from cars off the lot, not NHRA published times or index BS .

MUSCLECAR REVIEW magazine published their first list of the 50 Fastest Musclecars in the November 1985 issue. Here's an explination of how they came up with the list. An exhausting search of 60's era automobile magazines was made. After collecting as many drag test results as they could find, the list was compiled. To prevent a small number of cars from dominating the list, similar engine/body combinations are grouped together with the best performance numbers used to represent that combination. [for example, 5 different 69-70 HEMI B-Body drag tests were found] The times shown are for cars in stock condition. Add in the cars that gt listed and Mopar is well represented in the top 20. It stands to reason though, Mopar was by far the most prolific manufacturer of factory race cars during the "Musclecar Era".

The '70 LS-6 Chevelle is right up there but certainly not the fastest.
