Trick Flow 440 heads, The Real Deal?

-
Would these heads work with domed TRW pistons, or would you have to go with some type of flat top piston?

TrickFlow recommends OEM..............read that as flat top.

Piston companies will take your casting of the combustion chamber and make you a pop up piston that will work with the head.

So, anyway, I'm getting most of my application information from the TrickFlow instructions I downloaded from the Summit Racing web site.

Thanks IQ for all the info! Keep us posted on your magic on these heads.

I have a silly question.

how are the valve cover bolts drilled? on my eddy heads they are not drilled 90* to the gasket surface. they are drilled at an angle like the factory iron heads were. I cannot use the fancy fabricated valve cover with the eddy heads because the bolts are not straight.

The Edelbrock heads I have here, RPM and Victor, have the bolts holes drilled and taped perpendicular (90 degrees) to the valve cover surface, just like the TrickFlow heads. Looks like you got some weird RPM heads there.

thanks Jim. I ordered up new head bolts and gaskets.

Has either of you had a chance to check the push rod clearances? Id like to run 3/8 push rods in the future with my roller cam.

So much for valve shrouding causing the end of the world.

I ran the flows on my bench with a 4.500 bore and a 4.250 bore.

Lift........TF w/4.500......TF w/4.250.....RPM, 4.500 bore 2.25/1.78

.100..........76/61............75/60...............76/60
.200........154/132.........154/131............164/130
.300........227/193.........223/190............224/180
.400........279/239.........274/230............276/209
.500........324/261.........314/246............318/237
.600........337/270.........329/262............333/254
.700........332/276.........333/270............346/267

This was the best flowing port in the first head I tested, the other three were very close.

Heavy duty castings, just a really nice head. If they are ever again available when I need more heads there is no sense buying anything else.

so it looks like the small bore does cost a little bit of flow but its not catastrophic.

what do OOTB box eddys flow? what hp gains would you expect on a moderately built 383. going from OOTB eddys to these?

Where's the exhaust port on these things - are they raised requiring a funky set of headers? Not sure I saw that in any of the docs. Are they heli-coiled where it counts, like the rocker shaft hold down bosses and exhaust manifold flange? Custom valve covers needed (taller) or are the valve cover bosses moved up like the rocker stands? ?

The exhaust port is in the stock location.

I see no heli-coils. AND I don't thnk they are needed. This is a very strong, well built head.

Yes the valve cover rail is raised, you will have about 1/16" more clearance height wise verses the RPM head.

This is a completely new head casting and is not a copy of anything I have seen.

Last OOTB RPM heads I flowed.

Lift................IN/EX

.100..............70/57
.200............145/112
.300............205/163
.400............245/197
.500............260/217
.600............276/231
.700............281/239

Just a guess, but about 50hp. You are talking about a 54cfm gain at your lift range. No guarantees because each engine is an experiment of one.

Many things I haven't been able to check yet, but I can tell you this.

Even with Trick Flow there is still no such thing as a bolt on OOTB cylinder head. I haven't checked seats and valve runout, guide clearance, install height, etc but with all the aluminum shavings in the intake and exhaust ports you still have to dis-assemble and clean these things before you run them.

This is why I sent them to a pro! Thank you Jim!

As seen, the larger the cylinder bore the better the head can breath into the cylinder.
My W5's peaked @ .600.

Bore .......cfm @ .600
4.185 ........ 312
4.030 ........ 294

If your going to build a 440 stroker small block, here are two ways it can be done.

MoPar has a 440 @ 4.185 X 4.00 stroke
Rod Bloomer's kit @ 4.030 X 4.25 stroke

Price aside, I don't know the difference any way, which would you build? LMAO!

Looks like you got some weird RPM heads there.

No, say it aint so

These are the nicest BBM head I have seen to date from a Completed ready to go stand point. So there you have it, 2 shops, different views and the same conclusion. These heads are the Real Deal.

Jim is right, they are not a copy of something else, kind of like a Hybrid of the RPM style and the Victor style. I will have rockers mocked up on them tomorrow, Hughes 1.6

id love to see these on a low deck stroker of yours. i have a feeling these things are gonna make plenty of power.

would it be safe to say that with the intake runners being 240cc it will create a higher rpm power curve then the eddy heads? would the larger intake runners be able to support larger displacement then the eddy's?

I already have the TRW's. Looks like I'm going piston and cylinder head shopping. Thanks for the information, IQ and MRL!

From Trick Flow:

"Additional advantages of PowerPort 240 heads over stock heads include clearance for 3/8" pushrods, ductile iron valve seats, bronze alloy valve guides, and multi-angle valve seat machining on precision Serdi® equipment. Assembled cylinder heads come with premium 11/32" stainless steel valves, Trick Flow by PAC Racing valve springs, chromoly and titanium retainer options, and 7° or 10° steel valve stem locks."

i saw that they were machined out a bit for the larger push rods. just wanted to see if it was enough.

Looks like I'm going to buy some for my Ross pistoned 470 cid.I just wanna say thank MRL and IQ52 for the help. These guys are great to give out info.I already have MRL lifters but please spend some money with the fellas if you can they are a great help!

Jim and I are a lot alike. We love helping you guys/gals out, its our lifes work.

I did mock up a set of Hughes 1.6 roller rockers, Std offset, not the Victor offset. They line up real good, a touch to the exhaust side, no big deal. The wipe pattern was a very nice .055" with a total of .700" lift. Plenty of clearance with the 1.550" springs they came with. Another check in the Win column for these heads.

I have 2 builds in the shop that I will be testing them on, a 505 RB and a 500 B, both with HR cams. Actually they are very similar in build specs, as they both want the same thing. Only real difference is one guy wanted a tall deck, the other wanted a short deck BBM.

I also did confirm that they need the Victor style bolts, std long bolts are to short. Only had a touch over 1/4" threads coming thru the head with washer and head gasket, not enough!

BIG bores make more power, plain and simple.

I would think that anytime you increase the surface area of the piston top you'd be able to better take advantage of the explosive force pushing them down the cylinders. I assume that's the theory behind it.

Hey Mr. Liston, what would you recommend for pistons with these heads? Looking for a nice 10:1 street 440, nothing real radical. Thanks again for your work and info.
