my Low dollar 318 hop-up project

This is real nice man. Maybe when you get completely done, you can make one single post just listing everything out. That would need to be a sticky.
That thought did cross my mind. Maybe when this is finished I'll make a single post so it would be easier follow the build. It's been fun, though, and I've enjoyed all the responses..... :)

How is progress coming?

Been very busy as of late (more busy than usual), however, I only have two more valves to lap on one head. The other head is assembled.

For sure the plan is to trod on until I'm posting my trip at test-n-tune  ....

Got the last two valves lapped. Assembled the head. Gave it the leak down test, and all OK. Both heads are now fully assembled. All that's left is to plug the emission ports on the exhaust. I think the plugs are .25 cents each, I need 8. Two more dollars but I have 8 bucks left :D

What - I bought the 1/4 by 20 set screws (get the short ones). I plugged the emission ports on all the exhaust valves today.

How - I use a 1/4 tap, a couple of drops of oil to start with and a couple of drops along the way, and turn the tap back and forth cutting only about 1/8 turn at a time. Be sure the set screws are about a 1/2 thread inverted. I know some folks put a sealer on 'em, but I never have done that. Not a bad idea, but I've never had one leak or back out.

I've never had to drill a head, nor have I ever broken a tap. Takes about 6 minutes a port. Count on 1 hour for all 8.

Heads are completely done!!!!

2 bucks spent leaving 6 bucks left........

Just a side-track project for a reason 100% not related to this project..... I've decided to get the transmission rebuilt.

- NO intentions of lowering the E.T. of the car through the tranny
- Plans are still to run the factory converter in the car
- NOT part of the cost, as this will have almost no effect on the project
- ONLY insuring that when it's up and going that I remain leak free.

Tranny shifts fine as it is, however, for my personal use I want 40 year old seals and gaskets replaced. Going to upgrade the 2nd gear band for sturdiness, not performance gains. Plans are to drive the car a lot, and I never know how far...... which is the main reason I like the tall highway gears............ for now LOL

I've decided to get the transmission rebuilt.

Its a good idea to do it now with them out of the car and install them once, and since the thread is focused on the engine the cost associated with the trans has no bearing on the outcome.

Very cool what your doing here. I assume the same theme will apply to the transmission? Ie; stuff that can be done on the cheap or by the op..

Nothing wrong with going to a 3.8 or 4.2 kickdown lever and solid, rigid bands and even a mild shift kit. All of those small mods will enhance performance a little bit, but help increase longevity a lot through shorter shift times and reduced clutch slippage. Cheap enough that you should at the very least consider it.

Actually, I'm not a tranny guy, so I'm hiring it done by a professional (mopar guy at that). This will not be a cheap 300 dollar bench job. It is a bench job, but the guy is going to make it "not break", but at the same time it will add very, very , little to the E.T. of the car. If I break into the 14's with this car, I want it to be because of the project 318. I'm staying the course with the project. I truly want this car to be an example to the folks that want to follow the build.

Yes, the guy is going to upgrade bands, and a few other things that will make it very stout, but really won't be much of an aid to the E.T. I'm sure a fresh tranny will help a small smidge, but I want the 318 to do the work :glasses7:

I understand completely, but I don't think there's even a newbie young gun that wouldn't go for a cheap shift kit while they had the transmission out. Since it adds to the longevity, I don;t think it's cheatin. lol

The guy is going to rework the valve body to shift smooth but quick. It won't shake the dash, but will move to the next gear very efficiently. we talked in length about my expectations, and my desires, and he thinks he can bake the pie to perfection! He did balk at me using the factory converter, but that is what I stated this project would run with....LOL

He is known for building tough 904's and mopar trannies. He build one 904 to put behind twin turbos (600+ horse) in a C-body convert. No issues. This is just one example. I've known of him, but my 1st time giving him my business. Nice guy, hope he comes through for me.....

What would be so wrong with a factory high stall? You thought about that?

It's possible you already have one.

you've been to my house?? LOL.. yes, my 904 came with a factory high stall, has the pink sticker that says "high stall" from the factory.

Well how bout them apples? That'll go probably 2200 behind your warmed up 318. Maybe more.

What about adding the lower 1st and 2nd gears, help out with the mild gears out back and still have a good cruising rpm.

As I mentioned above, I'm doing everything I can to be sure that the tranny doesn't "aid" me in reaching my goals. I just don't want it breaking or leaking. This build is truly about throwing a skimpy 500 dollar budget at a 318 2bbl in the car.

Got a picture update for us?
Heads back on yet?
Pics of the car?

I think it's an awesome idea all the way around. I believe you will be surprised. Do you plan to track the car to see what it will do?

ABSOLUTELY !!!!! I will post my trip to the track, that will be the real fun! Progress is slow, I have a little time here and there to throw at it, but it's progress! The E.T. slip will give folks the realistic results.

The goal is still to run with a factory '73 340 duster auto 3.21 car, and they've been well documented to go very low 15's, and high 14's with better tires. In fact, a member here tested one brand new that his sister bought, and could not get past low 15's as from the factory. My goal is to get into the 14's, even a 14.95 will work for me.

For those that ask what they can do to their 318 2bbl to spunk it up, but have limited knowledge and even less money, I'm trying to give them at least one recipe of a 500 dollar budget build that would allow them to run with a factory '73 340 car, and many other muscle cars from '65-'74. Without changing gears! Or converters! No headers! I did say in the beginning, though, that dual exhaust is assumed for this build. I would think this would be very satisfactory for those people. That is why I used nothing I already had, but shopped and bought each item as if I were them. Keep'n it realistic.

So far a few doubt I will make my goal, and they may be right. But I love the challenge. Whether I make it or not (I'm confident I will :D), I'm having fun and hope somebody can use this thread (or something from it) to benefit their car.

This will be magazine worthy. Of course, none would run it, since they can't get sponsor money. lol

Maybe a silly question, but will a synthetic oil change fit into the picture? Might be a few more h.p there...
