Btw,
Customers only have to burn me once.
Theres many more waiting, happy to give me their money.

I can sorta tell when im going to get burned, and try to prepare myself.

Rusty, wash your hands of it. tell him to come and get the block and 2 paint buckets of parts and don't come back. Also tell him don't expect any favors at work and start charging him 3rd column prices out of the wholesale book. And also make sure you store the crank in salt water before he picks it up.

I did an after hours carpet tuck for some surround sound speakers. I fished the carpet and pulled wires for the 4 monitors and charged $50, about 90 minutes of work. I finished the work and the guy told me I didnt do a good enough job (huh?) so he offered me 30. I told him 50 an hour and I gave him the extra 30 minutes for free as it was a labor oversight on my part. He didnt budge so I grabbed the wires at the carpet edge and dragged them out the door with me. He was pissed he didnt get the completed job for 30 and I was pissed for not taking the money up front. Never looked back.

Big problem with out society now days is that so many people their word means nothing. A handshake used to be an honored contract!!
RRR tries to be ore than air and upfront, and it all bites him on the *** end. No matter what you decide to do, you will sleep soundly knowing you were more than fair and the other guy is an asshole.

I think when you take a little more time and clean those parts up, load them up carefully in your truck and bring them back to him all neat and clean with apologies if he's any kind of man of his word he's going to know he F'ed up big time.
This over $200 labor to a local old man? Let's not even mention junk Chevy parts LOL
Triple R hasn't been back here to comment but I can only imagine that he thought this guy a pretty fair dude to even start in on this with. Or was he bit by the admitted itch to get his hands greasy on some Chevy stuff?

at 400 pounds it's worth a whopping $28 as scrap.

I agree, no help lifting it back into his truck, the last thing you need to top this off is a back ache, or worse.

Plantar Fasciitis is what I have been diagnosed with. Look it up. It's a *****.

Don't have to look it up...got it a decade-plus back. My condolences.

Best thing for it (and I tried just about everything else) - Strasburg sock - $40/ea, but that's what finally fixed it...don't make 'em too tight when you go to bed, or you'll wake up in pain about 0200 and have to loosen them. The 'boot' things are fine (better) if you're a back sleeper, but if you're a side sleeper/roller-overer, the sock it the ticket

Mechanic friend up the road works out of his shop at the house doing side work. Ford trained when he was a kid, working for a company maintaining trucks for total about 30 years. Particular about who he works for. I trust him, really wouldn't want anybody else working on my stuff. Besides the Mopar. That's the hobby toy I enjoy working on. You know, the wifes car and my truck, tractor. Whenever I ask him how much after a job, he always says, man I don't know what to charge my friends. So I say how many hours? He tells me and I offer 40-50 bucks an hour. He rarely takes it. Point is, eff your guy. He doesn't know a good mechanic when he's got one. I don't go to friends looking for deals. I go because I trust them. Eat it and move on, no more good deals for him. My 2.

Same. My best friend gets Labour for free. But he does a lot of the work himself, and always helps me on days off.
Other good friend never helps,if he does, he actually slows the jib down and effs stuff up.
If hes around, kinda helping its 1/2 rate during business hours.
He makes big bucks flying helicopters, so im not concerned about charging a him a fair rate for work.
Buddy rate and classic cars 50/hr compared to my usual 70.

Dont feel guilty about charging for your time, its worth something.

What did you expect from a Chevy guy???

Seriously, this kinda stuff is why I like to do work for myself and don't like to take on jobs for others...

You try to be a good guy and help someone out, and they f*ck you...

Dear Rusty,

It sounds like a case of "lack of trust" on his part.
Or remorse and trying to pull something, maybe.
He also possibly doesn't understand money in labor to save an engine like that.
I would have told him to come get the engine and parts you bought.
And give you the 200 dollars and what ever money you put in the parts.

A deals a deal. It ended when he agreed to give you the motor for services rendered. Any new agreement is up to you. You just got to quit being such a nice guy. In the future get prepayment of 1/2 and photodocument everything. BTW my luck the block would be cracked. It would serve him right if you sold it back to him. I bet he's got friends whispering in his ear who don't know jack about machining. And BTW think about storage charges!

Another Point well made! Don't let people change who you are. Because other people are not nice and can't keep their word shouldn't change someone. I beg to differ and ask Rusty Rat Rod not to stoop to that man's level. To keep his hands clean in his heart clean. Let's not us be the one whispering in our friends ear anything but to be the better man. That's what we are correct?

No matter what road you take a "man" like this will bad mouth you at every opportunity from now on. He sees no value in you or your work. To him its like refusing to to pay the neighborhood kid for cutting his lawn. He's an entitled bully.
Demand to be paid. The only thing that will change is that you won't be further taken advantage of.

Absolutely. I've learned in my older age that being grumpy and holding grudges does nothing good for me. For Me. MY reality.
BTW who put the flipping like and dislike button so close together.

You should never have touched that junk, being that rusty. Only a few of us know what an absolute miserable job it is to hammer stuck pistons out of a rusty engine, one at a time. Give it back, it’s no good anyway. Assuming you are like me, you have too many projects and too little time to finish and enjoy them. How much time do we have left? Get rid of the junk, it only wastes our time and money. Cut to the chase, and let’s get something up and running so you can enjoy it. If you do side jobs, get paid a decent wage. And then get 1/2 down before you start, then you know they are serious. I only work for myself anymore. No one understands the time, money, and effort to do an engine right. Everybody wants one, but they want it now and for cheap. I have stories, but I’ll spare you.

As for Plantar fasciitis go to a Podiatrist. Mine was caused by a planters wart. The Podiatrist gave me a topical to kill the fungus and then he removed it. I still wear “Sockell” compression socks and have been good for about a year.

You made your mistake when you decided to charge by the hour instead of flat pricing it up front.
Here's what it's going to cost to break it down..good, bad or otherwise, that's the number.
Doing this for 40 years now..I've never charged an hourly rate, and I can't say I recall the last time I got burned.

Yeah, give it back. But take pictures of everything you can. Pain in the butt for sure, but CYA or PYB. Stands for cover your arse, or pack your bags. It might be difficult, and uncomfortable, but get a third person if you can. If this person is this difficult on a tear down of a very badly rusted engine, he has lost any trust I may have had at one time. The old 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me' routine. If this guy is unable to man up on his deal, then that leaves it up to you to be the man. Now me? I would most likely go off to the max on this knucklehead, and I'm keeping it very clean....But you have your act together, you'll do what is best for you. But whatever you decide, DO IT AND DON'T LOOK BACK! Good luck!!!!

"I might have known a guy once" who could not collect on some engine work. "I heard" he got access to the car/ engine and ran a 1/4" drill right into the front of the block and through the front cylinder.

As I have got older, I have found that life is better for me, if I have no hate or grudges toward anyone. If I get screwed by someone, it will only happen once, but I refuse to hate. I can tell them exactly how I feel, but it will end here.

I have heard better, but I’m not talking...

Hell, that ain't no fun! Hate is easy, screw me once and find out. There are people I have written out of my life for better than 45 years!

Personally I do hate those that wrong me, but if they get me twice , it is my fault!! When I was younger I could have serious vengeance in mind. I ask God Almighty for forgiveness for those thoughts.
