I almost wanted to cross my eyes for that warp image...
Ugh I never expected this when I became a dad. Used too, news stories involving tragic things to little kids never bothered me, but now, it's a gut wrenching feeling. EMS just came by, we live on a set of hills over looking the river, I guess some lady was down there about 3 hours ago letting her 4 kids play in the rapidly moving flood waters and a 6 yr old is now missing, sucked away by the current .

At the same time, you need to put it in perspective. Life is dangerous and kids can’t be kept in a bubble of safety or they will never develop the skills they need to survive.
It’s all a balancing act. Limit harm and risk, but allow them to get to the edges to learn.
A friend works in a campground.
A couple weeks ago a toddler drowned. Tragic. Buddy stood there watching them perform cpr.
He felt so helpless.
Cant bring himself to returning to the area where it happened.
I watched my kids like a hawk any time we were near water. And if available threw lifejackets on them.
Hope the chid is found.

Dont have to teach kids how to swim, but they need to be taught how to float.

That's not a bad idea. I've been thru combat water survival and SERE where they teach that stuff. Hmm
How did you go to SERE school? Were you active duty?
When I was assigned to the AFRCC doing SAR missions 12 years ago. They asked for volunteers cause they had extra money to send us.
I went thru it as well, and it is not any fun. When I was in the Navy...
23 days at Fort Ruckers in Alabama. In mid July, hot as hell. But that's where I got really good with land NAV. They sent me and the entire Blackhawk SAR crew I was assigned too thru it. To say it SUCKED is an understatement

Yeah. I mean not fun at the time but I get a kick looking back at some of that stuff. The Air Force and Army was putting a huge emphasis on it post 9/11 after that Jessica Lynch situation as well. They started sending Guard and Reserves regularly after she was capture
Did you make it back to "Camp"? without getting caught?
Met a guy that did training up here. There is a facility up in the provincial park. Pretty harsh conditions, all swamp and all kinds of biting insects. Winter is just as bad. Or worse. He spent 3 days in the bush at -35. No fire. No food.
No. Made it close though. There was only 6-7 that made it closer than me out of 30 sum
