So basically I got a new position at my job that will require me to spend a lot of time behind the wheel. I have never in my life owned a front wheel drive vehicle and most of them have been V8 powered. Now I need something with four doors that gets good gas mileage and not a single car that fits that bill is appealing to me at all. What would you all recommend? Oh and I am trying to keep this below 30k.

Also can a mod please fix my awful typo in the title.
 
Many of the 4 door mini-SUV are well under 30K. I just bought a Mazda CX-5 and my daughter is looking at the Toyota C-HR XLE (24K), they hide the rear door real nice and it gets really good gas mileage:

I prefer American cars but sometimes you just have to go with the flow..... Treblig
 
What kind of driving? Mostly highway? Mostly city? Or a good mixture of both?
 
I usually start with Consumer Reports online. They haven't steered me wrong so far. I trust their ratings. Just don't put a lot of faith in customer ratings though as I have discovered if someone has a complaint.. reasonable or not.. it seems they are more likely to want to put it out there. I know that if I buy a product that I am happy with, I probably won't bother to go back and rate it. Then I would probably find a few other magazine articles online to read before I commit to purchase.

I have been reading a lot in car and driver and motortrend. I really wanted to keep it American but seems like most writers are favoring the foreign stuff.
 
Most car journalists have been favouring the foreign stuff for the past 30+yrs! The domestic stuff is better now compared to 20 years ago. There is a reason why there are so many Honda’s and Toyota’s on the roads these days. Folks who want a car that starts almost every time you turn the key and needs little else than brakes and oil for many years buy the Japanese cars.
 
VW TDi anything. Amazing motors, especially the ones that cheat and still get 50mpg.

Stay awain from Nissian, there CVT transmissions are problematic after awhile. Don’t ask me how I know this....

I have had a few friends win volkswagens. Thst is one of my options but I have seen many problems with their electrical systems.

I know. I always wanted to favor American too. Until I bought a used 89 Toyota pickup. Other than oil and filters, front disc brake pads, a battery, maybe a starter (not sure), and a timing chain at 140k, it was trouble free. After that, I thought maybe I should change the 4 speed trans grease. I pulled the drain plug and it looked like honey pouring out... clean as brand new. When I sold it at 201k, it still had the original trouble free clutch.
My only drivable vehicle now is a 2005 Ram 1500 I bought new. 101k and good so far.
I have been a mopar fan since my first car. But I have been concerned about Chrysler for years.
 
My recommendation is to put the big boy pants on and just go find a good reliable econo box that fits your needs and buy it. Who gives a **** if it’s not exciting to look at as long as it gets you from point A to point B.

Even American isn’t American anymore. Got buy a Toyota or Honda and don’t look back.

Don't fret a lick. Old 1980's news about Toyota doing the 200k thing issue free. My '01 360 Ram has 249,*** on it, driven daily and runs like it has 60k. My brother just took his '01 3.3 mini to the junk yard this week with 275,*** and it ran like a champ, only did a water pump to get there, just body was falling apart. My son's '04 Ram Hemi has 227,*** and purrs like a kitten. This is just me look'n around quickly at what's in my yard or my brothers.

That CVT issue seems to transcend Nissan. Long range, they seem to be trouble, from everything I've read about them. I love my Hemi Ram 1500, but with the brats in Phx and my mother's advancing age with more frequent trips to the south, I'm looking for a Mini Cooper S :D. Might be the only blown car I'll ever own. :lol:

Buy a new one because used are near the same price.
And just get the EX ... dont get navi because the car comes with Apple carplay which is easier to use.
In 5 yrs you will thank me...
