comp cams lifters

Not myself, but reading quite a few have had issues. I dont believe comp as much as Hughes I believe.
 
Yes. Never had any problems before.Just did a 318 and had 4 fail by not pumping up.Took them out,pulled apart and cleaned, re-installed only to fail again. Replaced all with Lunati's that have the snap ring instead of wire for the plunger. Haven't started it up yet.Fingers crossed.
 
I came to find out c.c. makes different grades of lifters . I upgraded to the premium lifters and all is well so far .
 
neither comp or hughes makes lifters
there are really only two choices
and only one for retrofits
(info may have changed)

A buddy has had a couple go bad in his 440. Not the quality they used to be for sure.
 
Like wyrmyder sez only two US sources for flat top lifters today...Hylift-Johnson and Johnson Mfg. Both in Michigan.

I believe Johnson Mfg. has a list of their biggest users on their website.

I believe both Comp and Crower buy their solid flat lifters from them. I have both and they do not have the oil band...both are identical.

Not sure on juice lifters.
 
I should of taken photos. The Comp and Lunati look way different in placement of the oil band. The Lunati had 2 bands,one wide and a narrow band. A friend told me that he had problems with a 2nd gen Hemi and found that there is a difference between big,small and Hemi block hydraulic lifters. Apparently the one size fits all doesn't always hold true.
 
I bought/installed my "Hughes" HD FTH snap-ring lifters in 2004, when I also purchased their HE3037AL cam. I set the preload to 1/2 turn and have never had an issue, other than periodic lashing.

I have to say I've installed allot of Summit and Jegs (probable that the are the same manufacturer)low buck cams and other than a few ticking lifters on start up they were good cam sets. I've installed plenty of Comp's too.This was my first failure.Hope to fire the car next week when life gets out of the way.
 
Installed a Lunati Voodoo cam and lifters when building the 340 in my 73 Sport project. Could not get them set. Replaced them with a set of Crane anti-pumps and had no better luck. This was all before attempting a start up. Ended up going with a Comp Cams solid cam and lifters, no more worries about hydraulic lifters.

Depends on the block, the cam lift and how tall the lifter bore is... I like the no oil band solids so it matters not the height of the lifter bore or the lift of the cam.
 
Well if this don't work,I'll be going for solids.Not much quality anymore.

If it was only the lifter that was damaged, it wouldn't be such a big deal. But when the lifters fail, so mush expensive collateral damage is done. That's what sucks...

Agree, but we shouldn't even have these issues. We didn't used to, we pay good money and expect a good product. Now it seems like some failure is acceptable and ignored by the companies.
 
You have to be concerned about fake parts, too. Swap meet vendors, fleabay sellers and even some reliable outfits have sold junk with a fancy label.

If you are unhappy with the parts call the seller and ask for a refund or replacement.

Not a bad idea to buy parts from the manufacturer. You get a good deal from Crower here and you can't beat their quality.

I deal directly with a few outfits and their prices are good and they can steer you to the correct parts that will work instead of guessing when ordering online or thru a catalog.

I have had several hydraulic lifter failures, most recent with a set of Comp retrofit hydraulic rollers.
I am done no more hydraulic anything on a cam.
 
We are running solids as the 273 originally had them, and I like the versatility of them. Doing the same to the new engine going in...eventually.
