Anybody running 10s with a small block and factory iron heads

-
That car just looks slick! Are J heads ported extensively? What rear gear? Is it pretty street friendly? Thanks.

The ports are not real big, i run a 4.56 gear, this car is not driven on the street, but the engine was in a street car for years, i just put a smaller cam in, and when i done with engine its going in a 73 Duster street car. I have a 340 i going to build.

If you are going for Stock Eliminator, the E,F,G & H classes are a tough playground. There are a lot of SBM running in Division 4 in those classes & most of them can run 1.00 or better under the index without trying.

doesn't much matter. Its a bracket race at the end of the day.
Not many( if any) events where a stock or superstocker even if nowhere close to that far under the index cant compete.

Not always a bracket race....friend of mine in his F/SA 340 Barracuda 68 FB has two heads up races in the 1st Divisional Race in Vegas......1st one to the finish line wins

Yep, in a stocker meet it's like bracket racing unless they are in the same class, then it's heads up.

right. Winning class is the only time it matters. And sometimes you might not even have another car in your class.
But its 95% bracket racing. That is where the primary focus of the vast majority of guys is.

Thats cool Valiant ! , some of the D/SA Dusters are flying right now.. theres a local pretty successful stock racer that runs a big block D-E/SA Camaro he tells me the Mopars give him fits as his big block can't run with them ... good to hear!

That's Cool John , all of your cars here impressive!!!

Thanks!

The stocker 340 are the toughest with stock heads intake carb compressoin
and cam lift. The trick to all these is top rate machine work and LOTS of
time and patience!

Did the X heads get any port work? Sounds impressive for stock X'ers!!

No sir = We have been to the tear down barn a dozen times
Heads are carefully CC in the runners intake/exhaust as well
as valve removed and visually inspected by tech men who are
usually engine builders and or machinists or Both!
We do flow/inspect many heads to find the best ones. You would
be surprised how much these old casting vary from one to another.
We have 100 plus sets of heads on the shelf.

Reason I ask is because I have e set of X heads on my 360 in a dart sport and it runs terrific!! But but these at a swap meet many moons ago and being young and on a tight budget just did a valve job and new guides and ran them!

@GTX JOHN
I’ve heard the head flow can carry a lot.
What kind of spread do you see?
I have seen 30 CFM variance between ones I have
tested. That does not include some castings that came
from the factory so darn bad that I rejected them upon visual
inspection. I have seen exhaust port 1/3 closed from core shift.
They used the castings over often 10 times back then before discrding
Look at the # after the 894 IE: - 1 to 9. Every time they used the
casting they raised the # on diget. Generally the core shift is seldom
anything but detrimental. The lower the number of times the casting
was used the better the port configuration!

I flowed a set of stocker heads for a buddy many year ago and it was probably for simplicity reasons one of the most impressive heads I’ve ever had on my bench. It was a free-be job and one that didn’t really interest me because it’s a game I’ve never played or will. I still wish I would have kept a copy of the flow numbers because it got to its max number quickly and never dropped off and went the other way. I know why and how, “valve job angles” and I know it cost 100’s of thousands of dollars to figure it out years ago but these guys that build stocker engines nailed it. Probably 50, or 52, or 55 degree seat angles but when my buddy asked if I could do a valve job for him I laughed and said all I could do is screw those heads up with my simple tools. I told him if he wanted a fast reply ask the shop he bought them from what valve angles they used. Lol . So for the heck of it he did and the guy almost chocked laughing. I’ll just say those heads didn’t hit 250 cfm.

So, I have to assume the “somewhat bad heads” would be perfectly fine in a ported condition. The real bad core shift no, but there is some very usable heads on that shelf!

The ones on my shelf are all pretty decent. The ones that sere real bad we just
did not buy unless we got them on an engine. We used to go to Pomona Swap Meet
every month for 20 years. You are right if Ported they would be fine BUT with that
much core shift I would be a bit nervous about the thickness of the port walls. I guess
just do the crummy ports first and if they go thru just toss them out if you have the time. I run stock heads so I am not knowledgeable about porting. The man who said
you would never see 250 CFM is ABSOLUTELY right = Stock Xs do NOT flow that on
the optimistic flow bench in the country!!

I would think a small block A body could run 10s with stock cast 340-360 ported heads and some "juice"

Well the A body already has good power to weight in terms of the 340 cars. I mean lighten it up,and go right?

Good luck this weekend
Hope you and your son go many rounds in both stock and super stock
This will be the first time in 10 yrs I won't be passing out the time slips
Don't think Anita will be either
