i love to read. almost anything. i just packaged up a part to washington state and just received a part from east coast. the fetish i have is that if the parts i got are wrapped in newspaper, i try to read what is in that paper. i try to see what is going on in another part of the world. from local news to supermarket ads to police blotters. it is very interesting to me. when i ship stuff, i try to pack it in news papers or union tribune or local lumber yard stuff. i guess the guy that said it was correct, "it take sooo little to amuse some people."

Some years back we were remodeling a bedroom. It was an old house, with an addition built at some unknown time.
The walls were all plywood installed with copper nails. Sadly, it had been poorly installed and the house had a roof leak that destroyed the ceiling and the plywood.
Anyhow, under the first layer of stuff we found star wars stickers on the walls installed sometime in the '70s during another remodel. Behind that we found the original beaverboard glued to the shiplap that made the walls.
Around one of the windows in the addition, they had used newspaper tacked to the studs as an air barrier. It was all from 1939 and 1940. There were all kinds of articles talking about Germany and such - we tried to save as much as we could but it was in pretty poor shape.
We also found that lots of the plywood used for shelving and random patch panels had come from ordnance shipping crates from the local naval yard.
Took forever to finish that room because we kept finding such cool stuff!

Fun to see what happens in other parts of the country. I am guilty as charged.

Guilty....I’ve done this...sometimes it’s real interesting when it’s from a different country and not in English.

was cleaning out my grandparents house and found old newspapers lining some dresser drawers, took them out and opened them up, they ranged from the late 50’s-1980’s...had lots and I saved them to look at some time....the old ads are crazy, stuff used to be cheap!

It’s not a fetish, it’s being informed.

I do it.

I been goi g through old boxes of stuff at my moms house and a lot of it os wrapped in old news papers.

I like to look at the dates. It an instant snap shot of that day and can bring that memory right back.

Sometimes its almost to much ya know?

I like to wrap up parts I bought with the sales ad I found the parts I’m selling. I would like to be able to see the look on their face.

I've been a Carpenter for over 33 years. I've found newspapers from over 100 years ago, still good enough to read. I enjoy it.

Hand up. I always read the paper that is used in the package. I also use newspaper in packages I mail, and try to use newspaper from the same day.. a little OCD maybe. Good question OP.

I made it through your first 2 sentences..... just couldn't go any further. Too much to read..

yep, me too - I always read through the packaging

For twenty years (1980-2000) I lived in and renovated a house built in 1821 in Southwest Virginia. When we got to the kitchen there were 5 layers of old style sheet linoleum, with news papers between the layers to keep them from sticking together. I tore it up layer by layer reading and saving what I could. I was doing this at about the time all that mess was going on with the Contras in Nicaragua. The most shocking article between the flooring was from the 1930s about the US sending in the Marines to protect the interests of the Dole Corporation, in ... Nicaragua. What goes around comes around...

Man, that's Cool! Would live to see the 'ol house! That's what I do, and I dig that kinda stuff. These unrealistic TV shows with unlimited budgets and the fact they go to break, snap their fingers and the place is done gives home owners Very Unrealistic Expectations!

I love to read. I found many newspapers in walls of old farmhouses and the work stopped to try and unfold them!

Me too! It's a hoot to read about what's going on in other parts of the country. The older papers are a slice of the time machine to remember how things used to be.

Well, I guess that some of y'all that I have bought parts from...I may be feeding the fetish a little. When I buy something, I typically pay for it with a USPS money order. When I am at the post office filling it out, I always wrap it in a little local newsletter/advertisement paper called 'The Coffee News' so nobody can see the money order thru the envelope. Hopefully it provides a minute or two entertainment.

I do it too. Its part of the thrill of the trade. My grandfathers old house was insulated in old newspapers when we remodeled the bathroom we found papers from the 60s there was one in there from the jfk assassination. The bathroom was built on years after the house was built. The house was built in the 40s the bathroom was added in the early 60s apparently. But back to parts being wrapped in papers I love going thru the papers and seeing the sale ads and stuff like that just adds some extra excitement to the part I just bought. Im easily amused.

we had a cable damage in a trailer park that was built over a landfill. They graded the landfill and put 3' of dirt on top and then built the park but we were finding stuff when we dug up our cable at 36". One thing that caught my eye was a rolled up newspaper. I carefully peeled off a few pages and I could actually read some of the print. One was for a complete "Bangers and Mash" dinner for 47 cents! The date was unknown but it had to have been a while ago. Maybe 50's ? I gave the paper to the park manager.

I love reading the papers from elsewhere.
I like it even better when there like 10-15 years old… also makes me wonder a bit….

I was sure this was gonna be another Ann-Margret in tights thread.

.....shoot.....

I did read that she frequently wore them as pants, whiteout any other covering like a skirt or leotard.
Pretty bold for the 1960's.
