318 build #2 "cost minded" for the '74 Duster

-
Starting with a Magnum will make both goals easier.

Staying with a roller cam should, too.

20 down our single highways, going through small towns. I think 13.9 will be the tough part with the 318 because of the 2.94's, stock converter, and no headers. And trying for the 13.9 will make the 20 mpg a tad difficult as well. email says another package should be in today !
iam thinking id like to be part of the 11 second 3.23 club

About 6 years ago we went for 13.9's with a stock converter, no headers, and 2.45's in the '76 Duster. We made it, but that was a 360 and we didn't check mpg.

20 mpg seems like a lofty goal. What did the six cylinder feather dusters get? How heavy is your right foot?

stock 318 with those gears should get around 18 mpg@1900 rpm 45 ish mph with a 26 tall tire
if he can increase low end torque it should give a mpg boost
smaller primarys in a thermoquad might just do that if they are smaller
feather dusters were in the 20s setup right

I've gotten low 20's MPG in a 318 powered 67 B body.

Those are light B bodies but not A body light.

Efficiency helps.

That was a 9.2:1 67 LA but it burned so well clean water dripped from the tailpipe.

The OP already has a more efficient ...basically everything, for sure heads and cam, which is more than half the battle.

...of course no way would that car do anywhere close to a 14 second 1/4.

Basically, I'll need more power than a factory X-head 340 as most of them couldn't get into 13's with 3.91's and I only have 2.94's. But, I'll need 318 2bbl mpg.

(Said in a bold announcers voices from ’50’s TV ….)

Sounds like a job for a Thermoquad!

(Oh the Weird Al Yankovitch is coming out in me!)

i do not agree the carb held back the 68 69 70 340 as well as traction
just a carb was 20 hp and the tunning tricks and a good short time is mid 13s with 3.91s
the 14.0 14.1 3.91 cars were traction limted with e70 tires but ran 99 mph
99 mph is mid 13s with a good 60
my 1968 gts 340 727 3.23sg all stock 85k miles with just spring clamps went 14.3@97 mph

True, those old style tires they came with new didn’t help much on the track.

I have gotten 19.7 with my LA 318 in my Swinger. Bone stock 2 barrel with small tube dual exhaust and 3.23 gears.

changing carbs and such is not "factory". What I said was my engine will need to make more power than a "factory" 340 X-head.

I know somebody that bought a brand new 340 Demon with auto and 3.91's. All they did, and ALL they did was bolt slicks on it and it ran 14.20's factory bone stock with zero spin. But that isn't 13.9's. And that's not with 2.94's. lol

i should have not worded it that way not my strong suit
you will have a better carb cam exhaust and traction that will help you exceed the power needed to run your number as compared to the factory 340 setup
timming on a stock 340 was soft as well
a strong stock 340 setup right intake 650 dp or thermoquad 2 1/2 exhaust good 60 foot is a mid 13 second car you will have all that plus some roller cam etc
just 22 cubes less so it might equal out
260 270 hp@ 3600 lbs gets you in the 98 mph area thats 13.9 with a 1.9 60 imo

I do plan on getting over 300 hp (flywheel) out of the 5.2, but it will never be dyno'd to prove anything. Biggest thing is to get the car to move with 2.94's and a stock converter.

something was not right with that driver or setup or motor

5400 in 2nd is 98 mph with a 26 inch tire

The Demon driver didn't have much to mess up on with the auto and slicks. Actually, I know a really good Mopar guy I knew had a friend that bought a '70 Duster 340 4 speed 3.91's. With the only addition of slicks tried to get into 13's and couldn't. Without changing parts, they did bump ignition timing and tried everything on the launch. Went 14.0's to 14.10. I think the numbers are pretty much on Que. Most magazines that tested these cars had them around 14.4's. I can tell ya, you just didn't grab a 340 car off the lot Friday afternoon and turn 13's Friday night. But neither here nor there, it won't have a bearing on what the 5.2 runs. :)

at what elevation 5000 feet?
friend of a friend cant drive maybe
stock 3.91 cars were 14.1@99 mph
how did i go 14.3@ 97 mph stock
if a 4 spd 340 3.91 with slicks goes 14.0
99 mph in a body is 13.7 13.8 with taction
98 is 13.9ish
97 is 14.0 41.1

if you hook thats what it is

a duster with slicks 3.91 4spd should go 14.0 backwards imo
maybe he could not shift or shifted @ 4500 or 7k

Were at 600 ft. I don't want to turn this thread into "what did 340 cars run factory stock". But it would be a cool thread to start!

Thanks.

Now I'm shopping for a Duster.

The question is what was the MPH? The ET doesn’t mean much. If you don’t know the MPH and the weight you have no clue what power it’s making.
