68 Barracuda Formula S 340 missing trim tag and Vin / dash

Of course it's not. It also doesn't tell you it's a 340 car! The first letter for any Barracuda is B, not P !

Like I said elsewhere, those are Shipping Order numbers. Since there was no VIN on the dash, or fender tag available, someone decided that the numbers on the trunk lip were the VIN numbers and had the title reflect those numbers. I had to do a class for the Illinois Secretary of State about pre 1969 numbers on cars, they had NO IDEA until I proved it to them...

Guess your right and I'm wrong since there is no fender tag to prove other wise.

Lol, the vin on the title was grabbed from the SO stamping to generate a title and someone MAY have added the P. Guess we'll never know unless the original owner can fill in the history blanks.

Here is an example of a fender tag from a 68 Dart GTS. See the SO#? It starts with a 1 but the VIN number doesn't. I won't publish the VIN because it is not my car...

The seventh stamping, B , is the assembly plant. In this case, Hamtramck, Michigan.

If this is the b you are referencing, and, if it was part of the vin, it would be the fifth digit and would indicate a 6 cyl engine.

Which would make sense with the rear valence without cutouts as a 6cyl would come with.

The last six numbers are the build sequence numbers, and as stated before , the plant code is Hamtramck and the engine code b, is for a 6 cyl engine.

I dont see any way to properly decode this car without the original dash and fender tag. If he doesnt have those, the car will have to have a new vin assigned and will never be a numbers matching car.

My gut feeling is that he got ripped off by some charlatan trying to make a quick dishonest buck.

The meaning of body stamp numbers before 1969 have been know since that time. The first letter is always for the model, the second digit is always for the date, the third is always for the plant it was manufactured in. The last 6 digits are the Shipping Order Number which is also on the fender tag on the lower right. There is no "decoder ring" needed...

This very well could have been a 273-2bbl manual transmission floor shift convertible.

Were all 68 floor shift barracuda’s 4-speeds?

Were all manual transmission/6 barracudas column shift 3 speeds?

This is a body that needs a state issued VIN at this point.

I think the same applied to 70 E body cuda's in California with any performance motor. No cut outs or chrome tips.

1970 for sure. A quick Google search says 1969-71, if you can believe it. The '71s had cutouts in the valance, I believe to fit the tips. My '72 Charger did. Turndowns instead of tips, no cutouts? I'm not an expert, I just knew N97 existed.

N97 is a complicated deal. Applies to particular models, body styles, motors, and each year treated in its own.

I don’t believe any 69-71 A-bodies had N97 nor any 340 cars.
