Should have asked my question here. Hood clearance.

Is there any bow in the hood for clearance for the air cleaner? It is a dropped base.
Hood is still at the body shop. Strings are straight across. The center of the air cleaner obviously is sitting proud. I should be able to use another air filter to lower it more.

Obviously the wing nut is your biggest problem. I glued a piece of foam on the underside of the hood to press down on the lid in one application instead of using a wing-nut. But you also have to take engine movement into consideration. Engine will move on the mounts, especially under load, even if they are new and in good shape. Yes, you can fine-tune the clearance using different filter heights as well as different drop bases, as long as it doesn't choke off the airflow within the filter, between the base & top, or interfere with the throttle linkage travel.

What's the drop on the base now?

The hood is usually raised somewhat in the middle and you may find that clears fine. Get modelling clay and put some in random locations on the lid and slowly close the hood. It will compress the modelling clay and tell all. Stop if you come into major resistance. I have a small block and an M1 intake with drop base air cleaner and it clears. one spot is a little close (one of the raised fins on this particular lid) but it works. (70’ duster)
How much of a drop base do you have? What intake do you have?

Yes, the hood is bowed slightly. You'll be fine as shown in the photos.

Mine sticks up about an inch or slightly more than that in my '68 Dart with GTS hood and clears fine. As suggested, throw some playdough balls around it before you slam the hood down for the first time.

Ede. drop base, 2-3/4" height filter was the magic# for mine, 67 notch.
Any smaller would put the lid too close to the air horn.
3" put it into the hood, used a nut instead of a wing nut.

The filter lid did very well in Engine Masters tests. Even better, with the 3"filter taped off.
But, that was on a dyno, not in a car with a hood a half inch away (and it was a K&N, not a speedmaster).

Put a scoop on it, cut the hood and put a 9in on there so the filter is up in the scoop…. :poke:

PS only do that when you have an extra hood…

When I swap in a fresh 340 with an airgap, I had to play with the drop base and filter thickness. the old setup was a stealth intake. Then I got a hood worth cutting up…

whatever you do, don't hope for the best and slam the hood!

put a ball of putty on the wing nut and press the hood down slowly

So on the 340 in my Duster I run an Edelbrock air gap manifold with drop base air cleaner that has .625" of drop and a ~2.5" tall air filter element, with a Holley 750 double pumper and a 1" tall spacer between the intake and carb. I rum am MP air cleaner lid and a ‘71 Dart hood. I run a '74 spool mount K member and mounts. I don’t have much clearance, but nothing hits the hood.

Might have to run a 2 inch filter element

I did the same thing. When I put an Edelbrock Air Gap in my 69 Cuda, the hood just touched the air cleaner with a dropped base Edelbrock base and a 3" filter. I called K&N and asked them what my options were. They told me that their 2.5" element would outflow any 3" paper element.

Remove the air cleaner. Mount an extended syringe to the top of the carb and close the hood.
That’s an interesting idea. I like it.

I find though that the areas they usually hit is the front edges of a 14" aircleaner/element usually nearer to the passenger side. I think if the syringe idea was used it would only give the allowable height near the Center of the air cleaner where the hood itself is usually the highest
